Ulverstone Secondary College or Ulvie High? by Simon Dent – Principal Since transitioning to Ulverstone Secondary College in 2017 some people could be excused, or perhaps confused, for thinking we are no longer a high school? The simple answer is yes, we still operate like the high school we have always been, with years 7, 8, 9 & 10 attending, but now with the inclusion of years 11 and 12 as well. We would like to give a shout-out to our partner?Westminster College (PA) for publishing an article in their student newspaper, The Holcad, which discussed what it would have been like to study there in the 1940s. The campus buildings in large part have stayed the same, but other aspects have changed since then. Elevate Collegiate Charter School in Houston, TX needed additional classrooms to house its enrollment. The obvious answer was to install portable classrooms on the large yard. The less obvious solution was to build a mezzanine in what was formerly attic space by building a structure within a structure. The 2nd challenge was providing accessibility to said mezzanine. The obvious solution was to install an elevator. The less obvious was to build a lift. Here are both creative solutions in place saving time, money, and without compromise. Thirteen Broward County Public Schools high schools are among the top public high schools in the nation, according to the annual rankings released this week by U.S. News & World Report, with Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy, Pompano Beach High School and McFatter Technical High School in the top 2.5% of all ranked schools in the country. In addition, Atlantic Technical High School and Cypress Bay High School ranked in the top 5%. Frankly, I don't really understand the world of #privateschools in this regard, and I would like to: How can a private high school (supported by a foundation with a mere $45-million endowment) purchase the abandoned Cardinal Stritch University campus for $24-million, pour another $100-million into #demolition and #renovations, and make a financial go of it -- when the closed college couldn't? Aren't campus-based #prepschool #privateschool #businessmodels pretty similar to that of a #privatecolleges, being highly tuition dependent? Both are competing against cheaper or free models in #publiccollege and #publicschools, in a region facing the "demographic cliff," at a time when many families are financially squeezed. (I had noticed here in Baltimore, where private schools are big, that #Boomer grandparents were subsidizing/paying the tuition for their #GenZ grandkids, but that's just anecdotal.)

What happens to a campus after the college closes? That's a common question. Here is one answer. I learned something similar was in the offing for Saint Joseph's College in early 2017, but the plan was not given sufficient consideration.
