A common misconception is that gaming is a 501(c)(3) “charitable” activity. There is nothing inherently charitable about gaming (e.g., lotteries, raffles, casino-type activities). According to the IRS, it's a recreational activity and a business with possible UBTI implications. Although a charity may use the proceeds from gaming to pay expenses associated with its charitable programs, gaming itself does not further any charitable purpose. So gaming cannot be a more than an insubstantial purpose of a 501(c)(3) organization. NOTE: Many states and localities (like Chicago) regulate certain types of gaming activities conducted by nonprofit corporations. Be sure to check these laws in advance of hosting a fundraising event.

What makes a poker tournament appealing? Of course, there are many things to consider, such as the location, the audience, the organizational structure, the prize pool, and so on. However, today I want to discuss another issue. What if we were to hold a poker tournament for charity purposes and within the community of the same interests? What happens then? That was the question we discussed before organizing a charity poker tournament at the HOT100 event, which aimed to bring together the Asian gaming CEOs community. The result surpassed our expectations. At first, the competitive businessmen accepted the challenge to compete, but as the tournament progressed, people seemed to become more and more relaxed, gradually letting go of the strong urge to win that everyone usually experiences playing in a poker tournament. Everybody seemed to feel much like a person donating money for a good cause, and as a result, the atmosphere grew more and more welcoming. It was a joy to watch people joke and laugh, having a great time together. The charity purpose united everyone as one team working towards the same goal: the final amount of money donated to the Blue Dragon Children Foundation, which was set up to protect Vietnamese street children from trafficking. The final amount donated to the fund reached $3400, with the winners' (David Artus, Joe Pisano, Christopher Hirst) decision to donate their prizes to the foundation, even though there was an initial agreement that the winners would receive their prize money, as in a typical tournament. So, I think the charity poker tournament was a real success!
