The North Carolina Department of Public Safety has established an official Hurricane Helene web page with detailed information on relief efforts. How can you help? ?? Monetary donations are currently the most needed. Please consider giving to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund or a reputable, certified charity such as the American Red Cross to help communities recover. ?? As of now, please refrain acting independently sending physical donations or volunteering in western NC. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, many organizations will be seeking donations to support response and recovery efforts. Sadly, this is also go-time for scammers. So what’s a well-intended donor to do? ?????? Your research! Just like you wouldn’t buy a car without test-driving it first, look into causes that are asking for your money. Some reliable resources to aid in your vetting are Charity Navigator, CharityWatch, GuideStar and Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance. A little good, old-fashioned googling can’t hurt either. At the very least, any legitimate charity who is responding to Helene (or any disaster) would have information about it on their website and social media. Be a good Sherlock Holmes and vet, Vet, VET your causes. Bonus, insider two cents — as a former United Way employee, I know and trust in their disaster response funds. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by Hurricane Helene, especially our neighbors in Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina. The storm has left behind a trail of destruction and catastrophic flooding, and many communities continue to face immense challenges. This is a time for our community to unite and support those in need, and we are deeply inspired by the efforts already underway. In response, The Leon Levine Foundation is committing $5 million to aid both immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts. These funds will ensure that essential resources like food, water, and shelter are quickly provided to those who need them most. We have already distributed an initial $1 million grant to the COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA, INC (CFWNC) to support its Emergency and Disaster Response Fund, which is assisting relief efforts across 18 counties. WINGS CRS - HURRICANE JOHN EMERGENCY FEEDING MISSION On Friday, October 4th, utilizing $2700 in donations received last week, Wings CRS completed its first emergency food and hygiene products deliveries to 85 impoverished families living atop the mountains outside Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. In the wake of Hurricane John—the second major hurricane to devastate the region within a year—these families had endured ten days without food. The mission provided essential relief to those most affected by the disaster. Our goal is to provide pantries of quality food to 1915 awaiting families in the same area who will not be receiving emergency food assistance from the government or any other aid agency as Wings CRS has been the only humanitarian aid for these communities since Hurricane Otis struck on October 23, 2023. $35 provides a pantry of quality food and hygiene products to 1 family. $105 provides for 3 families. 100% of your gift goes only to the needy families we serve. As most of you know, Hurricane Helene has caused significant damage, particularly in Florida and North Carolina. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who checked in, and I feel fortunate to be outside the direct path of Helene and Milton. However, with Hurricane Milton expected to make landfall Wednesday evening as a Category 5 storm, my thoughts are with those tragically impacted just a few hours north of South Florida. While I’m uncertain of the weather we’ll face in Miami, I know there are many others who will need your thoughts, prayers, and support more than I will. If you’re looking for ways to help, here’s what FEMA recommends: Volunteer: Sign up with reputable organizations such as the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD). They know where volunteers are needed and can ensure your efforts are effective and safe. Donate to relief organizations: Consider supporting groups helping hurricane victims in Florida and North Carolina, such as Caring For Others, Feeding America, Global Empowerment Mission, Ground Force Humanitarian Aid, Mercy Chefs, American Red Cross, and many others. Identify what is needed: Before donating supplies, check what’s actually needed. Unsolicited goods may not meet the needs of survivors. Avoid traveling to affected areas: While well-intentioned, unplanned travel can add strain on response efforts. Recovery lasts long after the media attention fades, and there will be opportunities to help in the coming months and years.
