New Idea -?The King's Buildings Commonwealth: The establishment of a Commonwealth at King's Buildings presents an exciting opportunity to reinvigorate the connection between KB students and the Edinburgh University Students' Association (EUSA). Commonwealths serve as dynamic student groups, each focusing on a unique set of hobbies and interests specific to a particular campus. By nominally limiting each campus to one Commonwealth, we create a focal point for students at King's Buildings to engage with shared hobbies, then connect with the broader range of student societies and our Students' Association. This decentralized approach, championed by Bintang Dirya, emphasizes the importance of democratizing and diversifying student opportunities in a sustainable manner. By fostering a sense of community within the King's Buildings Commonwealth, we aim to amplify student recreation and aspirations, ultimately enriching the campus experience and strengthening the bond between students and our Students' Association. This surge in interest in residential college life is encouraging, since it shows that parents understand the enduring value of immersive campus experiences. However, at King's College, UQ, we're acutely aware of our responsibility to maintain accessibility for students from all backgrounds, even those from regional areas. We recognise the value that local students bring to our community. Their presence enriches the college experience for all, creating welcoming experiences between urban and regional students. Are you visiting family and friends in different locations and states over the summer? See if there is a local university or college to check out! At the beginning of their college admissions process, students might not know what they are looking for in a school; seeing and experiencing any college is a great way to start to understand what they like and don’t like. In a city? Book a visit or walk around at a local university to see if they like the idea of going to college in a city (even if it is not that particular city). Near a large state school? Spend the day wandering around the campus to rule in or out attending that type of school. Near a rural campus? Drive through and around the campus to see if your child likes being in a quieter environment. Most students feel they need to have a list of schools they want to apply to before visiting schools.
