Great to be in Westminster today representing Together for Short Lives and joining with partners Hospice UK Marie Curie UK Sue Ryder and National Bereavement Alliance to celebrate #DyingMatters week. It is absolutely crucial, in what is likely to be an election year, that all parties commit to making palliative and end of life care a priority for the next Parliament. For children and young people, this means addressing the ￡290K funding gap including committing long term to the #ChildrensHospiceGrant. It means strengthening local accountability for delivering to national requirements so we end the postcode lottery in the availability of palliative care for children. And it means developing a workforce with the capacity and skills to care for this increasingly medically complex children. Policy makers must move beyond warm words and take practical action. Because #shortlivescantwait

Philly has had a difficult week. It has been made clear, in no uncertain terms, that our leadership has decided to enforce new legislation and enact a strategic strike against harm reduction and public health, weaponizing their power to cause great harm. The lease ending for Savage Sisters Recovery, Inc was one minor show of power. But the response that we received from the community, not just on a local level, but on a global level, has been astounding. So let me be very clear. This work will not stop. We will continue to show up, we will continue to serve, and we will continue to save lives. Because the people that we serve, our beautiful friends, are Worth Saving. Each organization delivering public health services stands in solidarity against these archaic laws, practices and policies. While we may have to get flexible and creative, we will never stop. We’ve been shackled and chained to outdated laws & prohibitionist policies for decades. It’s time to break free. I am certain this will be difficult and we all need to work together. But I believe in my core that the work our organizations do, serves humanity. So we will coordinate, collaborate, organize, serve, support, advocate & keep the light on. Time to stay strong, stand tall and serve ferociously. Like a Savage. I know it’s really difficult for Social Care and Political Leaders to get their heads around but safe loving families and “service users” really do know best. A choice based system will radically transform outcomes AND radically improve value for money and productivity. Many kinship caregivers miss out on financial assistance their grandfamilies may be eligible for because they are unaware of what benefits or support may be available to them, or they do not know who to ask for assistance. These healthcare professionals provide education of diagnosis, treatment, and procedures at a level that the child can understand and they help kids process big emotions through difficult times.
