If you were on that seat and got approached by a white passenger, would you give up your seat? Rosa Parks, an African American woman, bravely refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955. While we often recognize the courage it took to stand against racial segregation, Rosa Parks also had to confront the expectations and norms within her own community. In that moment on the bus, Parks demonstrated the profound bravery needed to challenge not only external enemies, represented by the unjust system, but also the societal norms that perpetuated injustice. Standing up to friends and community members who might have adhered to discriminatory practices required immense courage. I stood for toilets for men in marathons and Swacchata in Marathons even if it meant facing my male runner colleagues. Tata Mumbai Marathon sees open peeing by male runners on the Bandra Worli Sea Link every year. Or my friend Almas Virani who asked the Chhota Bheem cartoon series maker to show Chutki Stronger in the Chhotta Bheem series. Cassandra (Cassy) Nazareth who stood for getting electricity in the tribal villages in Aarey Forest Dr Seema Mishra ??stood for a cause like cleaning the Ghazipur landfill. In our own lives, there are instances where standing up for justice or principles might mean challenging our friends or societal norms. It's not always easy to question what's familiar or accepted, but true bravery lies in doing so, even when faced with discomfort. Where have you found the courage to challenge the status quo, even if it meant standing up to friends or societal expectations? These moments of bravery are the threads that weave a tapestry of positive change. Here's to the silent heroes, shaping a world where courage triumphs over conformity! ?????? Community as Art...a 5 Week Series. Week 3 https://lnkd.in/ejgUxuBc I am sure many of you would agree that there are songs that can take you to another place. The power they have to move, and transform is an incredible tribute to music itself. When you find a song like this - a song that speaks to you in a transformative way - it is not only the lyrics, and not only the music, but it is the tension of the artist, the words, the beat, the instruments and the message. It is all of it rolled into this movement - called a song. Sam Cooke wrote and performed one of those songs that can take me to another place. "A Change Is Gonna Come" may seem developmentally uncomplicated at first listen, but the symbolism, vulnerability, raw emotion and layers of history revealed in this one song is legendary. "A Change Is Gonna Come" is a civil rights anthem, but more than that, it is a legacy left by an imperfect man who had an extraordinary talent, experienced many hardships and died at the age of 33. It was not easy for Cooke to write this song. It went against his brand. At the time he was known for singing beautiful love songs and he was palatable to audiences who may not have (and most likely did not) appreciate this turn of mood and topic. But he wrote it anyway. Released in 1964, this song is still moving people six decades later. It is still timely. It is still relevant. The message is still needed. Community is now. #CommunityIsNow #SamCooke

Nominated for an Oscar, the Billie Eilish song "What was I made for?" (composed for the Barbie movie). I think it is a valid question that many may have. I have a little bit followed up on recent TV discussions in India. There is a whole country, subcontinent even, that seems to be in a sort of identity crisis. A country that is stating in utterances from even the leadership and intelligentsia of the country that it is freeing itself now from "colonialism", "slavery", claiming its own identity - words that seem astonishing to Westerners, who always seemed to have a clear taste and sense of what India was to them, certainly a multi-faceted and culturally diverse country, but a country with an identity. This subcontinent certainly had a complex history of ups and downs and extremely painful occupations causing alienation, Mughal-Muslim conquest and dominion for many centuries, European-Western, particularly British, colonial rule, hegemony, oppression, and exploitation with white racial superiority and christian religious supremacy claims, enforcing the abolishment of old traditions and cherished ways of life. But such a cultural and ethnic richness, such impressive knowledge systems that have withstood the test of time and served generations after generations with profound insights of great philosophical depth, astonishing and very detailed health care and botanical knowledge, amazing therapies, great technical applications and a remarkable antique, which formed the cradle of many civilizations around the globe, is responsible for today's global interest and adoption of Yoga and meditation and the Golden Age of which is still visible in many architectural wonders that have survived the challenges of centuries and millennia. India is currently claiming its own path, a path that integrates modernity and spirituality and thereby tries to avoid the pitfalls and shortcomings of materialism that lead to perceiving and treating everything as a commodity, a marketable and tradable good, ready for alteration and mutation as well as (ab-)use.

“I see the kids in the streets without enough to eat who am I to be blind to their needs?” There are over 600,000 people, families living on the streets today in United States of America, the largest economy in the world. This is happening at the same time we are investing trillions in innovation in the quest of creating a better world for people. It is the greatest paradox in the 21st-century, greatest wealth and greatest poverty. This is unsustainable. We can change this, starting with us. #betterhumansbetterworld #justice #equality https://lnkd.in/eaetMbcF

Let’s me honest it’s rare we see this level of pure vulnerability in a live performance ??. I was almost on the verge of tears watching this. When she won her final award for best album. I was gone ??. The rawness of her emotion when she received that award moved me for a few reasons. 1. I listened to Raye’s Album “My 21st Century Blues”. On repeat this summer. Never have I heard an album that made me feel heard and seen as much as a woman especially because I felt many of the emotions she shared in her lyrics. The song Escapism I just felt like it spoke to me a lot with the trauma I was feeling. 2. Every woman can relate to the issues that Raye spoke about on this Album. Women are harrsessed and violated in some way. Or have experienced heartbreak and rejection. I may not be in my 20s anymore but it took me back to some of experiences in that decade. 3. One of the reasons why I feel so many people relate to Raye is has a mixed woman she is talking about issues that others have been fearful to touch on. Plus she just seems so genuine. 4. Lastly even after she was rejected she didn’t stop working towards her dream. This is a testament to her commitment to being a songwriter musician and having her album get released in a different way. 5. Lastly if you want to see feminism in action I actually feel Raye completely captures this. I am saying this as we are in International Women’s month. Let’s look to seeing more women like this. Women who are real, have raw talent and should rightly be recognised. #internationalwomensmonth #dontgiveup #inspiringwomen #inspiringothers #keepingit real #feminism #femininepower

é fácil ser fascista num país livre, o difícil é ser livre num país fascista. Es fácil ser fascista en un país libre, lo difícil es ser libre en un país fascista. It is easy to be a fascist in a free country, the difficult thing is to be free in a fascist country.
