Five of my favorite things about Global Humanities, the history course all ninth graders take at The Wardlaw + Hartridge School: 5. It's interdisciplinary, linking historical information with foundational concepts in literature, philosophy, and the arts. 4. It involves reading whole books in addition to shorter texts. 3. It explores ancient human history at length, not as a mere footnote to the present world. 2. It's based on the conviction that teenagers are capable of forming and revising their own opinions and cultivating a vibrant intellectual life. 1. Every ninth grader takes it, and there are no special honors or AP sections, so everybody gets the same invitation to spend high school in mind-expanding ways. World history is just one of the things I think we're doing right at Wardlaw. You can find out more at an upcoming information session on campus on Saturday, January 11.

I recently wrote a blog for our parents highlighting the need to really think about the choices we are making for our children. Breaking Free from Academic Pressure: Rethinking Educational Choices to develop the Whole Child to Thrive. As we navigate our children's education, the choices we make about schools can have a lasting impact on their development and future success. In a society that often equates academic achievement with value, many parents find themselves gravitating toward institutions that prioritise grades, standardised tests, and performance metrics. However, it’s time to pause and reflect: Isn’t society placing too much emphasis on academic pressure at the potential expense of our children’s holistic development? Read more on the below link…

In a recent conversation with Paper, I found it truly inspiring to hear about the impactful work Superintendent Kirk Shrum and educators in Visalia Unified School District are doing to foster connections that extend beyond the classroom for students. Their dedication to ensuring each student feels a part of something larger within their community is remarkable. ???? "What research shows is that when students are connected to something beyond maybe just their academic class, they perform better, they feel better about themselves, and they have better attendance...if every student's connected to something meaningful, it's going to change their trajectory." ??
