After 2 very acrimonious firings in 2 years I wonder - is anyone on the board related to their corporate counsel? What is going on? This is shocking on many levels- the first female ceo ever- the first black woman- the first nurse. Is a board that releases this type of statement after releasing a statement about Dr. Steed being on medical leave completely out of touch? Are other employees at the organization ok? (I know the pr team isn’t) I know Dr. Steed and I’ve been impressed with her work and her candor. I like her so I had a strong reaction to this statement. I don’t like it. I don’t like seeing leaders I know or systems I know with this type of firing. It’s also a red flag for me that the system doesn’t seem to have women in leadership. I’ve wanted to work with them. I am impressed with the systems team in charge of wellbeing. I am impressed with the leaders I know. Great people. So I am shocked - I thought this system was an industry leader. I remain glad to know leaders there, I wonder if press outlets can cover this type of disconnect - a few health systems have had recent firings from the board that seem shocking. I hope press people can give more insight- and discuss what the disconnect is- she’s been covered in Becker's Healthcare Modern Healthcare HealthIMPACT Live Crain's Cleveland Business HIMSS Chief Healthcare Executive HealthLeaders and more. Do we cover gaps in perception? Were all the journalists disconnected from reality? She has been recognized by leaders from the industry for her work. I also wonder how this impacts employees including physicians and clinicians. Comments from an attorney: “It’s politely brutal to Dr. Steed. They are unapologetic and attributing fault to Steed. This is an acrimonious separation” We do not all agree on the best way to care for patients in our community. My thoughts are with Dr. Steed and the employees and leaders I know. The news:

The corporate hospital message is a signal. A signal that times have indeed changed in medicine. Brand over people wins for the 'system.' Some call the words, or lack thereof, toxic and brash. Gone are the days when CEOs share the journey of the departed leader and the legacy they leave behind. No dignified accolades, gratitude, or empty well wishes for the future. Perhaps Dr. Meyer had outgrown his role, and it was time for a change. Perhaps Dr. Meyer was a respectful voice of dissent that was unwelcome in the newer regime. Perhaps Dr. Meyer will be free to make a difference for care teams and patients with his next opportunity. Perhaps we will never know the truth. Silence is golden in corporate healthcare, otherwise, you're out. Words matter, as do actions. ?? I deeply appreciate the board members who embraced my vision and empowered me to implement necessary changes. These changes were daunting then, but they paved the way for remarkable successes.
