This year, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Wildlife Officer Academy graduated and pinned badges on 54 new officers in Paradise, Butte County. This group represents the largest academy graduating class in CDFW history. The newly sworn peace officers will begin a Field Training Program where they will apply their academy training under the immediate supervision of seasoned field training officers (FTO). Field training with experienced FTOs is also mandated by POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) to ensure new wildlife officers can apply the skills they learned during the academy to real life circumstances. FTO is the final stage of formal training. Upon successful completion, these officers will begin patrolling California to protect the natural resources of the state. The wildlife officers will be deployed across the Law Enforcement Division’s programs: regular patrol, marine enforcement, investigation of petroleum spills and response, and cannabis enforcement, to name a few. For some wildlife, disturbances caused by military training activities are actually key to survival. The rare eastern regal fritillary butterfly is found only at Fort Indiantown Gap in Pennsylvania, which is home to one of the largest expanses of native warm-season grasslands in the Northeastern U.S. This habitat requires periodic disturbance, at the right time and intensity, to keep the butterfly going strong. https://ow.ly/vO6u50R9xR7

In the United States, manufacturers, producers and importers pay a federal excise tax on firearms, ammunition, archery, and angling equipment. Additional taxes are also contributed from that portion of the federal fuel tax that is attributable to motorboat and small engine fuel usage. In 2023, more than $1.3 billion was collected, distributed, and matched with federal funds from State agencies for supported habitat restoration, species research, hunter and angler education, improved access for outdoor activities, and more. Explore the details in the new report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)' Office of Conservation Investment. Full report: https://lnkd.in/eJNUtdaV

‘Park ranger’ may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you hear that it’s World Ranger Day on July 31. You may be more likely to have visions of army rangers, Texas rangers, or New York rangers. But World Ranger Day is not about military- or sports heroes. Today, we pay tribute to park rangers, also known as forest rangers — the unsung heroes who protect, preserve, and defend America’s dwindling wilderness land resources. And we commemorate rangers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Most of us can easily picture that park ranger verifying passes and collecting entrance fees at an entrance booth of a national park, or the forest ranger interpreting wildlife and discussing conservation as they lead visitors on tours. But few among us are familiar with how often a park ranger’s duties bring him or her face-to-face with life-threatening dangers inherent to their profession. https://lnkd.in/gCk4APM

Alaska’s wolves need your help! The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Proposal 75 aims to drastically reduce the wolf population in Game Management Unit 16—a region roughly the size of West Virginia—to just 35-55, allowing the killing of 113 wolves. They claim this will benefit caribou, moose, and deer populations despite evidence showing predator control programs are ineffective in increasing moose harvest. Even more alarming, the proposal would allow aerial gunning methods to carry out reductions. There is still time to express your opinions on this proposal by submitting a public comment using this link: https://lnkd.in/em2PK8hu. Now this is progress towards a shift in thinking.
?? Victory! It is now illegal across the state of Florida to intentionally release balloons into the sky—which ultimately end up hurting or killing marine wildlife. This is a big win for our ocean, marine animals and ecosystems, coastal communities and the entire Sunshine State. Thank you to everyone who took action and called on Florida, and states across the country, to put a stop to balloon litter. Read our statement: https://lnkd.in/evAwFCZu
