Read. This. Book. Ok, so I’m biased by the fact I like understanding history; however, this book provided extraordinary context for many things I personally witnessed and/or participated in over my 30 year career in government. Extensively researched, methodologically sound, and exhaustively end-noted, this one is a must for anyone who wants to understand the value of intelligence, the impact of widely-available data, the importance of “strategic empathy” in geopolitics, the reality of disinformation, and the utility of covert action. This book places Russia’s current aggression in proper context, and poses important questions with respect to future scenarios for China. It has been a long time since I read 550+ pages without getting bored and wandering away. I trust you will find it equally compelling…if you are motivated toward perpetuating classic, liberal democracies as a credible form of government.

Finally, I submitted my book manuscript to the publisher Palgrave Macmillan on which I have been working for the past 3-4 years. It will be published around mid-2024. Book title: Postcolonial African Migration to the West: A Mimetic Desire for Being Book description: Postcolonial African migration to the West is not only a spatial movement in search of material and physical security but also an expression of the mimetic desire for being by imitating the West or “whitening” oneself?against the background of the dehumanizing historical legacies of slavery, colonialism, and Western dominance. It is a flight from oneself, from perceived inadequacies. To migrate to the West is an expression of the desire for being, not through detachment from the “fascinating” West but rather through adoration and imitation of its lifestyle, beauty ideals, and soft and hard power, and by living in the West. The model (the West) builds ubiquitous anti-migrant physical and virtual fences, which the imitator tries to overcome. The more the model re-strengthens these fences, the more the imitator tries to scale them. The anti-migrant fences are the meeting point of the model’s perceived superiority, admirability, and desirability on the one hand, and on the other hand the imitator’s inferiority complex and inner tension between the paradoxical desire for detachment from the model and its passionate imitation at the same time. This book argues that (African) migration to the West will continue even in the absence of poverty, conflicts, and climate change because it is also about the mimetic desire for being.

I argue that China's structural position within the global order since 1912 is crucial for understanding the dynamics behind the production of Chinese international thought. Great handbooks for people interested in engaging and applying African-centred Theories and methods. We can better understand Africa from the perspectives and voices of those who have lived it (Africa), those who have been or are still insiders. To research Africa, it's crucial to begin with the methods that fit into our unique experiences and realities. That's what these handbooks are about. Kudos to Abdul Karim Bangura for your sacrifice in mentoring young African scholars.
