I know it's important to not be political on LinkedIn, but I feel compelled to share this political ad in support of the Democratic nominee, who previously served as Vice President, aiming to paint the GOP nominee as out of touch and too extreme for the average American. Oh, wait, did you think I was talking about the 2024 Presidential Election? Not quite! This ad, which aired exactly 60 years ago this week, is from the 1964 election, and its message has aged like fine wine. At the time, Medicare had been stuck in Congress for quite some time, with heavy lobbying from private interest groups (notably one in particular, whom I won't name out loud) blocking its passage. It wasn't until Lyndon B. Johnson’s overwhelming victory in 1964—and the downballot success that reshaped Congress—that Medicare finally had a chance to become law. This is a reminder that while the presidential race grabs most of the headlines, the real change often happens down the ballot. Johnson's landslide win not only gave him a historic popular vote margin, but it also flipped 38 House seats and netted two Senate seats for Democrats. This reshaped Congress and made it possible for Medicare (and other important Great Society legislative reforms) to pass the following year, in 1965. So as we approach the next election cycle, let’s not forget: downballot races matter.
