Justice Department Issues New Guidance on Federal Law Regarding Voter Registration The Justice Department announced today that it has published a new guidance addressing limits on when and how jurisdictions may remove voters from their voter lists. The guidance document reflects the department’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible voter can exercise their right to vote free of discrimination or voter intimidation. “Ensuring that every eligible voter is able to vote and have that vote counted is a critical aspect of sustaining a robust democracy, and it is a top priority for the Justice Department,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “As we approach Election Day, it is important that states adhere to all aspects of federal law that safeguard the rights of eligible voters to remain on the active voter lists and to vote free from discrimination and intimidation.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gAs9A8ib For closed captions: https://lnkd.in/g6yv6Qe9

??Live in New York? Have a second home upstate or on Long Island? ?? Stop what you are doing. Seriously. Right now. You have about 48 hours to change your registration from NYC to your second home so that you can vote in the primary on June 25. You'll be registered in a district that really needs your Democratic vote (sorry NYC, but you really don't need me this year). Here's the website: https://lnkd.in/eRRbKycG It takes even less time than today's Wordle. Way less time than today's crossword puzzle. #TurnPurpleDistrictsBlue #Democratsvote

"In its 2023 report, the SPLC cataloged the impact of that decision—Shelby County v. Holder—in the Deep South a decade later. This brief documents the impact of an 11th year without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act in the Deep South, a year in which Southern lawmakers have moved to further criminalize voters and the voting process, continued to attack the voter registration process, and fought to deny communities of color fair representation. The last year underscores the doggedness with which lawmakers in the Deep South, unchecked by federal protections, will pursue anti-voter measures, especially those that target and impact communities of color; each year it is clearer that these attacks are not slowing down as time passes. Congress must act swiftly to pass federal legislation restoring and modernizing the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and instituting national minimum standards for election administration and accessibility— Congress must pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act—to protect voters of color and ensure all voters across the country can exercise their fundamental right to vote."

Campaign Legal Center is committed to fighting for voters’ right to know who is spending money to influence their vote and our government. When we uncover election spending designed to hide the spender’s identity, we seek an official Federal Election Commission investigation. Here's a summary of one of our most recent complaints: https://lnkd.in/e-M67U72 We are targeting a likely “straw donor” scheme, where political contributions are funneled through one entity to hide the identity of donors. This denies voters crucial information. It's increasingly common, and it's illegal under federal law. Learn more about straw donor schemes here: https://lnkd.in/e5eh4atS

?? Over 34 million Americans lack the kind of ID that growing numbers of states are requiring to vote. In a new op-ed published by Democracy Docket, VoteRiders' Legal Director Ceridwen Cherry unveils findings from VoteRiders' new research project in partnership with the University of Maryland's Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement, the Brennan Center, and Public Wise. As Cherry writes, the report's findings "confirmed what we at VoteRiders have known for quite some time through our work across the country: voter ID laws are wreaking havoc on the voting process, confusing voters and restricting the right to vote."
