Consider this, but in a school context. And what happens when the bias is no longer unconscious, but very much conscious, and intentional. Is this then no longer an inclusive, equitable, psychologically safe space? Should it be? Should EVERY school be an inclusive, equitable, psychologically safe space for kids to be & express themselves freely? Well newsflash: it isn’t. Some schools are intentionally, by design, & proudly exclusive, noninclusive, psychologically unsafe & noncompliant with human rights & anti-discrimination principles. So the question isn’t relevant to ask if schools are or aren’t, because we know many that aren’t, therefore the question becomes, are we ok with this? And if not, what are we going to do about it? What are YOU going to do about it? Nothing? Then nothing will change. We see so much discussion around equity & inclusion in the workplace, well what about upstream? Are we setting kids on a path of equity, inclusion & respect early? Are our systems & governance processes enabling safe, inclusive, equitable school environments? With 99% of kids in Australia attending a mainstream school, and with the ages of 5-18 a critical period in shaping who a child grows into, we can’t afford to get it wrong. We can turn a blind eye no longer. I refer of course to the self-proclaimed ‘elite’, private, independent, ‘self-governing’ schools, who can & often do, deprioritise equity, equality, inclusion, respect & safety to make way for a self-serving, ego-stroking, privilege-perpetuating, appearance focused, falsely credit-taking, tax-rorting, taxpayer-funded-spending, societal segregation & misleading marketing. Too harsh? What do you think? Are private schools eroding our ability to create an equitable & inclusive society? And are just ignoring this systemically through broken governance?
