Portland’s Broadway Bridge has been a vital connection since 1913, when it became the city’s first bascule bridge—and still holds the title for the longest span of its kind in the world. Interestingly, when it was built, "Broadway" only existed on the east side of the river. The west side was known as 7th Avenue—until the bridge united them under one name. By 2017, after decades of wear, the bridge’s Rall wheels—essential to its bascule mechanism—had deteriorated. Cracks had formed, and their once-round shape had become more conical, making replacement necessary to keep this historic structure operational. That’s where Peninsula Iron Works, a flagship brand of TerraSource Global, stepped in. With forged metal production scarce west of the Mississippi, we were contracted to produce new wheel forgings—each weighing 88,000 pounds and spanning eight feet in diameter.
