The point of scope 3 carbon accounting is to bless suppliers with endless surveys. Of course it's not. No one thinks we're going to survey our way out of the climate crisis. Those surveys matter to the extent that they enable action towards the goal of decarbonization. (Yes, also compliance, and I would make the same argument there). I'm excited about Terralytiq's approach because they're helping industrial buyers identify the biggest sources of emissions in their supply chains and prioritize resources to maximize impact. Primary data matters. And, it needn't be a prerequisite for impact. "Many Tier 1 suppliers rely on secondary data for much of their product footprint since the emissions often come from upstream facilities like smelters or refineries. For instance, there are fewer than 300 primary aluminum smelters in existence, meaning that Tier 1 suppliers are frequently sourcing from the same primary aluminum supplier. Obtaining primary data from one smelter is much more effective than surveying each of the top 50 Tier 1 suppliers in your network who all source from the same smelter to do their individual estimate."

There are many ways to leverage Climate TRACE data, and we particularly appreciate seeing how users enable real-world emissions reductions with data-driven strategies. Terralytiq is using Climate TRACE data to help their customers better understand their product carbon footprints (PCFs), and reduce them by choosing to work with facilities that emit less carbon. Reducing scope 3 emissions is made easier with access to facility-level supply chain emissions data. Excellent article on the role of Product Carbon Footprints (#PCFs) in Sustainable Procurement, written by my co-founder and Terralytiq's COO Will Glazener. PCFs play an increasing role in communicating expectations and progress on #decarbonization between the suppliers and buyers of raw materials, components, and finished products. They increasingly replace spend-based carbon accounting and can - if done right - provide deep and actionable insights into value chain emissions and point to sensitive interventions to reduce carbon. "The only way to reduce spend-based emissions is to spend less. The way to reduce product carbon footprints is to manufacture better." Must read for all corporate sustainability practitioners!
