Getting #teams to chime in and collaborate is a topic that is often front and center. In my experience, what's often overlooked is that not everyone naturally feels bold enough to chime in. In this post where I join several other expert coaches from the Forbes Coaches Council, my focal point is the reminder that often you, the #leader, need to specifically ask the more reserved members of their team for their input. Even though the input from your most vocal team members might be valuable, set a precedent of insuring that all team members share input. Not only will this build #confidence, the practice of contributing will build a sense of familiarity which diminishes #fear. There are plenty of great insights from the other coaches on this panel so you'll be certain to want to read this. Did we miss anything? Hey LinkedIn community, As leaders, it's essential to know the difference between coaching and counseling when working with your team members. Both approaches are valuable, but they serve different purposes and can have distinct impacts on your team’s growth and well-being. Here’s a quick breakdown of the differences and some tips on when to use each. Coaching is about development and growth. It’s forward-looking and focused on helping team members enhance their skills, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals. Coaching is ideal when you want to unlock potential, guide career progression, or improve performance. Counseling is more about addressing specific issues or concerns that may be affecting a team member’s performance or well-being. It’s often used to help resolve personal or professional challenges, offering support and guidance to get through tough situations. When to Use Coaching Skill Development: Use coaching to help team members develop new skills or refine existing ones. It’s about pushing them to grow and succeed in their roles. Performance Boost: When a team member has potential but isn’t performing at their best, coaching can help identify barriers and create strategies to overcome them. Career Advancement: Coaching is perfect for employees eager to advance in their careers. It helps them set goals and map out the steps needed to achieve them. When to Use Counseling Personal Challenges: If a team member is struggling with personal issues that are affecting their work, counseling provides the support they need to manage those challenges. Conflict Resolution: Counseling is useful when there are conflicts or misunderstandings within the team. It helps address the root cause and restore harmony. Stress Management: When stress or burnout is affecting a team member, counseling can help them navigate these issues and find ways to cope. Knowing when to coach and when to counsel can make a big difference in how you lead your team. What are your best tips for coaching or counseling team members?
