Sixth forms will have to teach pupils who failed their English and maths GCSE for a minimum of three to four hours a week or risk losing funding, the government has said. The divisive “condition of funding” policy, introduced in 2014, means schools and colleges must help students who failed to achieve a pass – grade 4 or above – to retake their GCSEs, or else risk losing funding. Department for Education rules did not previously stipulate a minimum number of teaching hours for resit students. But from September 2024, full-time resit students will be “expected” to study at least three hours per week for English and four hours for maths, with part-time students studying on a pro-rata basis.

Tutoring doesn’t just improve attainment, it’s proven to improve attendance, school engagement, self-efficacy and more. ?? (Read the most recent research into school-based tutoring we worked with ImpactEd Group on that’ll I’ve linked in the comments below??). ?? In my opinion, tutoring is one of the most cost-effective interventions out there, particularly when considering what some of the biggest issues in education are right now (attendance, the attainment gap, post-school progression, inclusion) and how tutoring can address many of them. If government funding is missing, what else do you think could be done to ensure schools can continue to implement tutoring? ?? Let me know in the comments! ?? #tutoring #intervention #covid #education #attainmentgap #attendance #inclusion
We know that English and maths GCSEs are vital for success in life, and also that tutoring is the best evidenced intervention for catching up on lost learning. This is why it makes no sense that the government has scrapped the National Tutoring Programme. Read more about the benefits of tutoring here: https://lnkd.in/eiwWcewf

The STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test is a standardized test administered to students in Texas. The STAAR test plays a crucial role in the Texas educational system. While it may be a demanding assessment, opting out is not legal and may not be in the best interest of students. The test provides valuable data to identify areas of improvement and measure student performance, facilitating targeted support and promoting educational growth. the STAAR test serves as a benchmark to identify areas of improvement and provide targeted support to students who may be struggling. It is designed to measure the academic performance and readiness of students in various subjects, including mathematics, reading, writing, science, and social studies. The test is administered annually to students from grades 3 through 12 in public schools across the state. It helps educators and parents identify strengths and weaknesses in a student's academic progress and work towards their improvement. Opting out of the test could hinder the ability to track academic growth and potentially affect future educational opportunities.

Students have higher grades and lower test scores post pandemic. In 2019-20 65.4% of first year college students took a remedial math course and 42.1% did so in reading/writing. In 2015-16 only 14% of first years took a remedial math class and 8.8% in reading/writing. “Now students are intimidated by anything over 10 pages and seem to walk away from readings of as little as 20 pages with no real understanding,” said a professor who regularly used to assign 30 pages of reading per class. Grade inflation in high schools is a real thing. Some school systems have moved to “50 percent rule” grading systems, which prohibit teachers from giving zeroes for missing work. In Florida, a bill to eliminate a requirement that students pass?an Algebra I end-of-course and 10th grade English/language arts exams in order to graduate recently cleared the Senate’s education committee. #postpandemic #collegeprep https://lnkd.in/dBfxdX55

Our analysis of how well secondary school pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds perform in major multi-academy trusts (MATs) across all regions suggests there is much room for improvement when it comes to delivering equitable outcomes for all our children. At one trust based in London, for example, 60 per cent of disadvantaged pupils achieved both English and maths GCSE at grade 5 or above in 2022/23. This compares to 34 per cent at the highest-performing trust in the south west and 5 per cent for another trust in the peninsula. Our article in Schools Week: https://lnkd.in/eHqzX9gk
