When planning an event, it’s easy to focus solely on the here and now—there’s always a long to-do list vying for attention. But the true brand magic lies in thinking beyond the now: how can your event become an annual highlight that your audience eagerly anticipates? And how can you continuously improve the attendee experience, which is crucial to your event’s success? Every decision you make today shapes the future of your event. It’s worth asking yourself: where could this event be in 1, 3, or even 5 years? I’m currently working on the 11th StartUp Show with Enterprise Nation—my 6th time running it. There’s something deeply satisfying about refining a project year after year. We start planning six months in advance, and this year, we took extra time in July to dig into attendee and partner feedback. That feedback is helping us take the 2025 event to the next level. Here’s a sneak peek at what we learned—and how we’ve acted on it: ?? Less content, more focus: Attendees felt overwhelmed by too many options. This year, we’re introducing fewer but larger-capacity stages, packed with highly curated, in-demand content. ? Smarter venue layout: Navigation was a pain point. We’re hosting the event on a single level at London’s impressive Convene venue 'Sancroft' - seamless, and stunning. ? More breaks for networking: Attendees value time to connect with peers just as much as the sessions themselves. ?? Enhanced lead generation for partners: We’ve added more opportunities for brands to engage meaningfully with our audience. Working on over 30,000 events at this point, I’ve learned that most people view events as this big, scary, ephemeral thing. They know it's important, but they don't have the language to talk about it effectively. It’s actually a lot easier than people think if you bring it down to first principles: 1?? 90% of the appeal of any event comes down to 3 elements: ?? The venue ?? The speakers ?? The ambiance 2?? Pre-event hype and Post-event follow-up are where you create the outsized value. 3?? Remember your 'why': If your event doesn't move the needle on company objectives, it's a flop. I don't care how many people loved it. OK, I know, I know. Easy to say, harder to do. But not if you follow a plan. Before systems like EOS, or Scaling Up, existed, entrepreneurs had to use a blank sheet of paper to figure out the step by step process of preparing a business for scale. Now they can go chapter by chapter, with worksheets and software, to clarify their vision, build out their org structures, analyze their financials, set their KPIs, and do 10+ other processes to prepare for scale. It has taken something opaque and given it clarity and structure. In the past, all the anxiety around events came down to the same blank sheet of paper problem. “So much to do, so many things you can do today, OMG I’m overwhelmed, I’ll do it tomorrow.” So we began to engineer a system for planning, throwing, and gaining new business from events in line with what others have done for running companies. We’re aiming to do 100,000 events on the Sched platform this year.
