I want to share an Excel initiative that I believe promotes safer work through the improvement of worker performance. Yes, I am talking about Excel's Apprentice Week. This is one week when our apprentices come together in one place to learn more about the skills required to do their work well, from the most knowledgeable and experienced Excel technicians and other leading refrigeration and air-conditioning experts. Led this year by one of Excel's Managing Directors, Craig Heerdegen, it's all about learning and sharing knowledge. Check out the video below for day three highlights.

Meet our Service Technician Paulo Muntean. Paulo is an Apprentice out of Local 447 and has been with us since 2022. Check out what he had to say about being in the trades during National Apprenticeship Week. 1. Why did you choose to start your career path as an Apprentice??Did anyone in particular influence you? My family is multi-generational in the HVAC industry. My father, grandfather etc. I decided to go more the service route. I had someone I knew for a long time working for Intech Brandon Nelson, who is now a journeyman on the service side, tell me about joining the union. 2. What advice do you have for someone thinking about becoming an Apprentice? Always be super eager to learn. There is so much to get familiar with in the trade but it's like joining a family and everyone has your back. Knowledge is shared freely. And finally, to take it serious as this as a career path, and the skills and the knowledge will always be with you. 3. What project or accomplishment as an Apprentice are you most proud of? One of the biggest projects I was part of was installing cooling at Mercy General Hospital in Oakland. They never had cooling, and we had to work to get 4 Daikin systems installed and piped into a new evaporator coil inside the mechanical room. Was cool being a part of such a big job and getting it all up and cooling. #trades #mechanicalcontractor #bestplacestowork

Over the past 6-weeks, the third-year apprentices completed their "Hazardous Locations" coursework. To increase their learning, their instructor built a lab to help them understand the function of a sealing fitting (seal-off) and provided them with the skills necessary to install a sealing fitting properly. The apprentices then worked to install the Killark Electrics sealing fitting, pull in wire, separate and space the wires, pack the seal off with packing wool, mix the Killark sealing compound, and then pour in the sealing compound to make an airtight seal. The following day, the apprentices tested their seals by pouring water down their conduits to determine if they succeeded in making a proper seal off. Did some fail? Absolutely! That's what's great about labs; failures are just opportunities to learn more! Out of the 100+ apprentices who completed this installation, only 10-20% have previously had the opportunity to install a seal off in the field. We are pleased to share an end of year update on the Transformation Training Plan for craft apprenticeships during 2024 & looking forward to 2025, available now on apprenticeship.ie: https://lnkd.in/dY4A-hnB ??Working alongside our #GenerationApprenticeship partners and training providers, progress achieved this year includes: ??Enabling a record 17,000 training places?for craft apprentices at phases 2, 4 and 6 this year. This includes 8,500 phase 2 training places, up from 5,600 places in 2023. As a result of this increase, delays in off-the-job training have been mostly eliminated. ?We are building capacity in training provision in 2025, with a similar number of training places planned for 2025. ?Apprentices on most craft apprenticeships, including the pipefitting apprenticeship are now able to complete their training within a four-year timeframe. ??Additional targeted measures have been put in place for 8 apprenticeships in 2025, including Construction Plant Fitting, Electrical Instrumentation, Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, Mechanic Automation and Maintenance Fitting (MAMF), Motor Mechanics, Plumbing, Refrigeration and Airconditioning, and Wood Manufacturing and Finishing (WMF). ?An additional €78m was announced for apprenticeship in the 2025 budget, this will support additional workshops and extra instructors/ lecturers around the country and help ensure that apprentices can progress on time through their training. ??Looking forward to working with all on growth & expansion. ?? Student success story: While working as a handyman, Gregory found out about the Skillpoint Alliance pre-apprentice electrical program from his sister, who thought it would be a good opportunity for him to start a more stable career. After doing some research, he thought the program would be a great fit for him and his son, and they both enrolled in Skillpoint’s pilot electrical class in Killeen, Texas in November 2023. In December of 2023, the Grimes’ received first and second place in the skills challenge, a showcase that is held at electrical graduations for students to show family, friends and employers what they have learned during their time with Skillpoint. A local employer, RK Bass, was in attendance for this showcase and was extremely impressed with Grimes' skills. Both Gregory and J.R. were hired on by RK Bass and now work as apprentice electricians/laborers, getting to work on various projects within the company. ??? Ready to write your own success story? Winning Bronze in the installer show has been a huge achievement for me.In reality, I’m fairly new to the heating game, going against talented guys with many more years experience under their belt has been hard work. Today I have been doing a little welding job at home, and it dawned on me, if I hadn’t had a hard apprenticeship while I was learning to be a welder/fabricator I would most definitely not be where I am today. When I mean hard,I actually mean *Days standing in front of a press drill, fighting boredom and the pain of standing in the same spot all day, drilling 25mm holes ?? *Days grinding sharp corners from plates, until your hands and neck cramp up, not mention blowing your nose full of grind dust * weeks of doing the same task, with no satisfaction. Knowing that nobody will ever see your work. *treated as a robot for ￡2 per hour! I’ve always been grateful to every one of my employers especially in the early days. There’s two ways of looking at an apprenticeship. You think you’re just cheap labour and have all the shit jobs or as I stand here today , you could look back and appreciate the work ethic my employer taught me. Phones ?? had no place during work hours,you got payed for every minute you worked and not one more. Apprenticeships teach you far more than just the trade , it molds you into the successful adult you hope to be. Today marks approximately half my working life as a plumber ! Ive been looking through some of my old projects … take a ??
