As both Florida and North Carolina grapple with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and now Hurricane Milton, my thoughts are with the healthcare workers, patients, and communities enduring these back-to-back storms. The resilience of hospitals, which continue to provide care despite infrastructure damage and patient evacuations, is truly remarkable. However, as highlighted in the article, even the most prepared facilities face overwhelming challenges when public services like water, sewer, and power are disrupted. If you dispense to patients in North Carolina and Florida that were affected by Hurricane Helene, both states have emergency refill waivers in place. For North Carolina, you can dispense up to a 90-day one-time emergency supply, including for CIII-V, until October 25. Daylight has come to the west coast of Florida after Hurricane Milton made land fall. This experience has reinforced the need for every Home Care company to have a detailed Emergency Preparedness plan. We have seen many examples over the years of Home Care, Home Health, and Hospice organizations who have had to work through and live through major natural disasters. As the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center it was imperative that Tampa General Hospital (TGH) stay open and ready to care for the community during Hurricane Milton. Storm mitigation efforts stood strong and all three TGH facilities remained fully operational. How did the hospital prepare for a near-direct hit from Hurricane Milton and for Hurricane Helene, which had devastated the region only two weeks earlier? Emergency preparations included the previous construction of an on-site energy source and water source and assembling an AquaFence water-impermeable barrier just before each storm to protect against the storm surge.
