Thanks for including me David. Software development is one of the most complex and unregulated types of engineering (hope people don’t get too offended by that) Software development is like a relay race. The hand off of the baton is key. And communication is key, but you also need to design your team to fit the balance of the project and you need to set expectations. Josh nails it by identifying the varying productivity of developers (which is not unique to software developers). Effective development teams need to evaluate what made small startups successful as flexible and multi talented teams, larger teams need to learn from that model as they design their new teams. I would add product knowledge to your suggestion that communication is key. Software developers must communicate and be communicated with and they need to know what they are building, not just complete disconnected tasks.

I think secret sauce is the engineers themselves. Some can solve a problem in 3 hours that takes another 20. Efficiency with the core fulfillment team can overcome other inefficiencies.

5 个月Flexability and time solve problems is extremely important, Agile intended to allow for that only ends up constraining development- with constant aggressive sprints, over planning and control over metrics vs value. Most engineers prefer independence over collaboration and end up being less efficient and feeling constrained. Some of my best engineers can deliver tremendous value in a short period of time over large collaborative teams.
