Our entire life is like a series of chrysalis experiences.

Death, need not be an uncomfortable word. On the contrary, it is crucial to life. Death of something leads to the life of something else. The birth of a new idea, the birth of a new mindset, the birth of an evolved meaning.

Egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to an adult butterfly. Now, you most probably have heard of how the metamorphosis of a butterfly can represent life. Well today I want to indulge you a little further into this concept, and invite you to hold your thoughts at the chrysalis stage in particular (the stage after the caterpillar stage, and before the adult stage).

Monarch Butterfly Chrysalis

Depending on the species, the chrysalis may be suspended under a branch, hidden in leaves or buried underground. The chrysalis is protected inside a cocoon of silk. This stage?can last from a few weeks, a month or even longer. Some species have a chrysalis stage that lasts for two years.

It may look like nothing is going on but big changes are happening inside. Special cells that were present in the larva are now growing rapidly. They will become the legs, wings, eyes and other parts of the adult butterfly. Key to this is that the caterpillar within the chrysalis needs to work through growing themselves in these ways, and as they develop over time. They need to experience this part of their journey alone and in isolation, protected from the outside World to nurture themselves within.

Chrysalis in context of the Butterfly Lifecycle

As human-beings on this planet, our entire life is like a series of chrysalis experiences. Because that is the journey we go through within our own being, our own thoughts, understanding who we are at our core while unveiling the layers of our self and in doing so, reinventing ourselves time and time again until we find consciousness. Yes we journey this life with gratitude to soulmates we call family and friends.

Yet ultimately the journey is within ourselves. All the while, we are cocoon-ed inside our being, this physical vessel of life we call the body – and although it may look like nothing is going on, there are big changes happening inside us each day. Changes that lead us closer to consciousness or further away through illusive identification. Time and time again.

Adult emerging from the Chrysalis

This can imply that we are caterpillars of life, up until the last breathe. Transitioning from one chrysalis experience to another. Breaking free from one chrysalis-thought into a butterfly of deeper insight, and then working our way through another puzzle of life back into a new chrysalis until we can again break free, evolved yet again – the cycle goes on as we continue to evolve, grow, renew, develop, learn and love until perhaps our final chrysalis, breaking free from life into what lies beyond death. Embrace each chrysalis towards the final emergence.
