? Thank you, Dave, for another enlightening lecture on the complexities calculating Biodiversity Net Gain for land developments and its application in field examples. In this past lecture, the need for more ecologists especially trained to undertake and evaluate these calculations was highlighted. It is imperative to attract and recruit more ecologists across the country for accurate and ecologically valid assessments of the BNGs submitted by developers, to preserve and or restore local habitats. This is a field that will hopefully bring more actions to protect the UK's varied habitats and their individual species for future generations. Scaling up restoration is one of the most important things we can do to help reverse the current biodiversity crisis (well, besides stopping continued habitat loss and degradation). But current restoration progress is hampered by a lack of cohesive management planning, long-term monitoring and reporting...to name just a few. Target 2 of the GBF (the lesser known 30x30 target) - to restore 30% of ecosystems by 2030 - presents an opportunity to address some of these challenges and in the process make huge gains for ecosystems. However, what is achieved in practice depends entirely on how countries intrepret the Target. Our new paper, out today in Nature Ecology and Evolution, unpacks some of the ambiguity in the Target to?better guide consistency in implementation and encourage genuine progress towards its achievement.

2030 is fast approaching, and despite the breadth of available interventions, global biodiversity loss is showing no signs of slowing down. Two studies show that we are capable of stopping biodiversity loss and that well-targeted conservation efforts can be effective — although, unfortunately, not all efforts are well-targeted. Washington State Department of Ecology recently announced its intent to promulgate regulations to reduce “criteria” air pollutants in “overburdened communities” that the agency has determined are highly impacted by air pollution. This rulemaking will determine the processes and strategies that Ecology will use to achieve air quality targets, which may include emissions reduction and mitigation measures. I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Welsh Peatland Restoration Conference hosted by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) this January 2024. This conference brought together leading experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts dedicated to the restoration and conservation of peatlands in Wales. The event was a powerful reminder of the crucial role that peatlands play in our ecosystems. Peatlands are not only vital carbon sinks but also rich habitats that support a diverse range of flora and fauna. The discussions and presentations underscored the urgent need for restoration efforts to combat climate change, enhance biodiversity, and sustain the ecological balance.
