I have not posted anything here for quite sometime and for a good reason. I recently took part in the historical fiction competition and was randomly assigned a historical period and was given a limit of 4000 words to unleash my imagination. Why? - I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and see where my writing stood What happened? - It was a fun challenge that I did not win. But, out of the 650+ stories from around the globe, mine also made it into the top 9% as a finalist :) What is my takeaway? - It is all about mindset, the effort and time you invest for you to reap your harvests. - Pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I discovered new heights to climb. I’ve gone to many conferences as a participant and often been disappointed with how few people I met or how deeply I was able to learn from others. This weekend the Writer’s Guild of Alberta gave me (almost!) carte blanche to design a networking session to do just that. First, as everyone entered the conference, I handed them a blank sticker and asked them to draw the animal that MOST reflected their CURRENT writing practice. This was a hard prompt for some who felt they weren’t very good at drawing, but even the bad drawers created pictures that sparked conversation (and some laughter!). The question prompted people to be both reflective, but also once the stickers were added to people’s name tags, offered others a chance to ask them about their writing process and see how they were the same or different. At the end of the night, I asked folks what themes they saw in the pictures and what the activity had sparked in them to consider. There were many animals that were the same, but what was interesting when you asked them why they chosen that animal, each person had very different reasons for being a cat or a turtle or a bird of Indistinguishable genus. The second activity was LOUD! A smashup of bingo, speed, dating, interviewing skills, photography, I wanted writers to go beyond just finding a poet or somebody who has an agent. I wanted folks to be able to learn from each other as there was so much experience in the room. I also hoped participants could go a little deeper with each other on subjects and issues that are key to the writing craft and profession. So when they found that poet, I asked them to ask the poet how writing poetry had impacted their other work or life in general. And when I asked them to find a writer who writes “for a living”, I asked them to ask that writer how long it took for that journey to develop and was living the dream all cracked up to be? Because I didn’t want to rush them, and I wanted those people who are less extroverted to be able to take their time but still enter the prize draw, folks only needed to get eight of the 16 signatures. The room was buzzing, connections were made, and my only regret is that I didn’t get to ask everyone the questions I designed. Feeling a little inspired after watching BBC's The One Show feature on the World Book Day Young Writers Competition yesterday. It was lovely to see Queen Camilla presenting the winners' prizes, and Tom Hiddleston reading extracts, particularly "Cell Mate," set in the future-that was really good considering the authors age. It made me consider writing myself again. With a book idea brewing, I'm eager to explore the intricacies of a story about a father-daughter relationship—themes of loss, resilience, and the enduring bond between parent and child. As educators, we often encourage young writers to unleash their creativity, but how often do we heed our own advice? For too long, my writer's brain has been hidden in cobwebs, buried beneath work-related reports and long-term plans and the like.. With Easter on the horizon, I'm carving out some dedicated time to prioritise my little writing hobby—in fact my idea relates to stories that delve into the depths of familial connection and the complexities of love and love lost. So why not experience writing yourself, and tell your pupils all about it.
