With one child off doing adult things (US Marines) and my next oldest preparing to decide on her post-high school plans, I’ve been spending a lot of time reflecting on what I would advise my younger self and, more pressing, what advice I should give my teen as she thinks about the path ahead. In no particular order, here is a series of the things I would tell young folks early in their career(s): Item 1) Until you get your hands dirty, you cannot know what you will and will not like about any particular career. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to know at 17 or 18 what you’ll do when you grow up. Take an educated guess and get started on whatever steps it takes to move forward.?

Practice makes a man perfect is one of the most ill-judged pieces of advice. Here’s why it will make you suffer. I’m sure this advice was repeated all your childhood. Be it your parents or your teachers. An advice which has existed through generations must be an important one, right? So why do I disguise it as ill-judged? Because the question of how still remains unclear. If I want to become the world’s best baker, will practising how to frost a cake everyday help me in becoming one? Probably not. You need to answer the HOW to practice You need guidance while practicing. You need a direction. Practising on the wrong things will make you great on the wrong things, not the right ones. It’s important to practise, but it’s far more important to know how you should practise. As Naval says, “What you choose to work on, and who you choose to work with, are far more important than how hard you work.” 14/30

Break down barriers in your post-military career with 3CIR's RPL process.

"Gaps in employment" are often a problem for the wife of a military spouse. My husband was in the Navy (now retired). We relocated numerous times over the years due to his position. His employment remained constant, but I had to adjust to whatever new area he was assigned. I learned to be extremely versatile, which is a positive attribute (in my opinion). I do not add many of my volunteer positions or 'odd' jobs onto my resume, because I don't want anyone to get the impression that I have never been able to focus or decide to move in one direction. A gap in employment does not mean a job applicant did absolutely nothing during that time. For example: In 1992, I sang the National Anthem for the Commissioning of the USS Essex. This is one of the small "jobs" that I never mention on my resume, even though it was quite an honor. Just because some people have resumes that appear 'disjointed,' it doesn't necessarily mean they are unreliable or not worth your time and consideration.
