In a move that critics say could turn “justice” into just another entry in the Trump branding empire, Ed Martin, D.C.’s freshly minted acting U.S. Attorney, has announced a project aimed at reviewing the legal strategy of prosecuting Jan. 6 defendants under obstruction charges. Dubbed “Project 1512” (because it sounds cooler than "Let’s Rewrite History"), the initiative promises to “get to the bottom” of what Martin calls “failures”—although legal experts suggest it might actually be a shovel aimed at digging out the last dregs of prosecutorial independence. Martin, a former “Stop the Steal” cheerleader who believes the Capitol riot was secretly orchestrated by someone he calls “Mr. Coffee,” disbanded the Justice Department’s Capitol Siege Section and dismissed cases against violent rioters, proving that nothing says “law and order” like letting folks who attacked police off the hook. He’s also working to lift conditions placed on Oath Keepers, because, as everyone knows, keeping extremists away from the Capitol is just too restrictive. Meanwhile, Martin’s leadership style is bringing new energy (and some old conspiracy theories) to the office, with the Justice Department suddenly looking like a Trump rally minus the merch table. DEI efforts are gone, the hiring freeze is in full effect, and former Jan. 6 prosecutors are wondering if their days are numbered. Critics argue this is less about justice and more about rewriting the history of the Capitol riot to fit Trump’s narrative, where patriots are misunderstood, gallows are decorative, and Martin’s claim to “fight until his last breath” really means “fight until the last shred of accountability breathes its last.” ???? ?????????? ???????? ???? ???? ?????????????????? ?? ?????????? ???????? ?????????????? ?????????? ???????? ????????????, ?????? ???????? ???? ??????. https://lnkd.in/gVB96b2m

For those of you that may have missed it, Chief Justice John Roberts issued his 2024 Year-End Report recently, his twentieth since his appointment in 2005. He addresses threats to judicial independence, specifically (1) violence, (2) intimidation, (3) disinformation, and (4) threats to defy court orders and judgments. There's a lot to ponder here, not the least of which is this: do we, as individual attorneys and members of organized Bar Associations, do our part to defend the courts from uninformed, partisan, and illegitimate criticism?
