***New Episode Drop - Episode 17**** ??According to the IFS - Institute of Family Studies research, immigrant parents have even higher expectations that their kids will not only get their undergraduate degrees but will go on to get graduate degrees. ????In other words, the kids are expected to attend college; ideally, it should be an Ivy League school. How do we pay for this education? You have various funding options. We jokingly divide these accounts into: - - Those kids can spend in Las Vegas, and those they cannot! We've reported for EdWeek Market Brief on some of the biggest purchasing co-ops, and how they're trying to drive down costs and set shared expectations for #edtech companies. (The California EdTech JPA is one example.) In our latest step into the topic, we surveyed the nation's school district officials on what types of products -- both tech and non-tech, for classrooms and other needs -- they buy through co-ops. https://lnkd.in/evKaSU7F

Nice! I just wonder if Futures Literacy, strictly speaking, is about designing and implementing desired futures. I could see that it might be more than just "futures thinking." For example, it could be about a capability to understand and use our anticipatory capacities also for other purposes than optimizing action for desired futures. One perhaps a bit radical alternative would be to claim that such optimization underpins our current problems. One way to read Futures Literacy is that it says that we should not always optimize the future because there's more to it. To be literate is to know when this is the case. Teaching kids to design futures could be a double-edged sword, if not done right. There are, for example, some linkages with Futures Literacy and the recent debates on metacrises, post-activism, the non-existent anthropocene, etc., that professional futurists may find interesting, at least when they are not paid to produce options and have an impact. Also for education theorists, this raises some deep questions. Maybe something to discuss in the Trento conference in June Riel Miller, Stefan Bergheim, Ted Fuller, Roberto Poli?

Futures literacy feels like the best thing we didn't know we needed in the K-12 space. Why? Futures thinking helps students create a vision for what they want the world to look like and think holistically about the steps we take now to design that future. It's a hopeful way to engage young people in their world. From climate action to civic engagement to restoring nature to finding opportunities for care and connection (and more!) - students are suddenly surrounded with a world of possibility, which is a lens desperately needed as we navigate constant change. If you're new to futures, want to learn more, or simply be inspired by the amazing people working to make our world better, I highly recommend the new series A Brief History of the Future which will premiere next week on April 3. It's exactly the kind of hopeful storytelling we need, full of inspiration for how we design better futures. In addition, PBS Learning Media is working hard to provide video clips, learning materials, and lessons to support educators around futures topics. I am happy to share I've been supporting this work in the production of various resources around futures literacy, and look forward to sharing more as these tools become available. Hey Michelle Blanchet, the PBS series: Brief History of the Future looks great. I'm glad to see that Ari Wallach is still in the thick of grappling with what it means for humans to use their capacity to imagine the later-than-now. I'd welcome finding ways to weave in conversations about why and how humanity can become more futures literate. One source: https://lnkd.in/e8nNF2XQ - From this perspective I think it is worth underscoring that when it became obvious, mainstream to consider universal compulsory schooling necessary and the ability to read and write fundamental for everyone - it still required (and continues to require) a wide range of efforts - from research into schooling and different pathways to learning how to read/write to experiments in different ways of managing our diverse knowledge creation, use, and transmission systems. Addressing the challenge of universalizing a better grasp of why and how to imagine the future is as significant as are the implications for humanity to cultivate our capacity to be free. #futuresliteracy #futuresstudies https://lnkd.in/etHdi4MN

Many school districts are naturally inclined to favor re-hiring the same #edtech companies they're currently using. After all, those vendors have been working in their school systems for years, they know the staff, they've heard day after day about the biggest challenges they face. How common is this inclination to stick with incumbents? We at EdWeek Market Brief take a look at this in a new story -- one based on an EdWeek Research Center nationally representative survey of district and school leaders on if they're likely to stay with incumbents or take a chance on a new player. It's an issue with implications many ed-tech providers, particularly upstarts with innovative products trying to dislodge established vendors. Our members can read the story below. https://rebrand.ly/h2gwtz2
