So much of science is mundane and incremental. Not necessarily a bad thing - we need to know what’s reproducible. But I’m inspired by new approaches to fund game-changing ideas. Anand Muthusamy is working on a moonshot project with Convergent Research to measure real-time activity of biomarkers in humans. He just published a tour de force paper on BioRxiv, where he developed a fluorescent sensor to compare fentanyl binding with real-time naturalistic behavior in mice (link in comment). Now he’s laying the groundwork for a focused research organization to translate this idea to humans - think continuous glucose monitors for all kinds of biomarkers. In episode 83 of the Once a Scientist podcast, we talk about risk appetite, the intersection of engineering and science, and just straight up going for it. Such an inspiration.
