Today, I had the privilege of presenting on behalf of the Microgrid Consortium < https://lnkd.in/gQRsRJR3 >, on how Data Centers benefit (save money, reduce GHG emissions) by co-locating with microgrids configured around efficient, modular, scalable Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems. Ready to explore how your data center can join the sustainability revolution? Reach out to me or visit Microgrid Consortium to learn more and start your journey towards a greener future! #MicrogridTechnologies #Sustainability #DataCenters #CHP #GreenTech #Innovation #ClimateAction YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gesP9MYx PDF file attached ? Abstract/synopsis: Data Centers (DC) are ubiquitous to our modern economy and indeed this conference itself is courtesy of a functioning DC. DC's comprise always-on computers. i.e.?resistive heaters whose waste heat must be removed to avoid system over-heating failure.?Hence all DC’s include chilling systems that consume parasitic power.? DC’s require high quality power characterized by steady voltage and frequency;?indeed power quality fluctuations are a leading cause of economic loss to DC owners. ? Fortunately, modular and scalable microgrids, often configured around Combined Cooling Heating and Power (CCHP) aka Trigeneration and supplemented by opportunistic solar Photovoltaic (PV) and or micro-wind turbines plus small Battery energy Storage Systems (BESS) offer a resilient, economic and lower carbon footprint solution. ? This presentation outlines load characteristics of a typical DC, then describes technology and economics of load matching via a CCHP centric microgrid versus traditional grid power.?The presentation will discuss stage-gate project development and touch upon project financing, permitting and managing expectation from relevant stakeholders – the public, regulators, etc…

While the projections for scale and timing of AI-driven data center growth varies widely, is it clear that: - Some amount of AI-driven growth is coming - It will demand advanced heat rejection technologies to accommodate higher rack densities (i.e. liquid cooling) - Some amount of this growth will happen in urban centers to ensure (data transfer) latency requirements are met Other questions remain around: - How/if governments will regulate the sustainability requirements for the data center industry - Will optimizing heat re-use be included in these sustainability requirements (to date the focus has been primarily on renewable power supply and water and energy efficiency) - Will electric grid constraints begin to steer data center siting decisions to locations where electrical interconnections can be leveraged for more than 'once-through power' (i.e. sites where heat re-use is favorable) We're not our of January yet, so welcome your projections for the year(s) ahead... #datacenter #datacentre #heatrecovery #districtenergy #sustainability

I attended a fantastic energy event earlier this week "Powering Up The Grid" hosted by ThirdEquation where a game changing product was launched in view of increasing capacity on the gird by up to 20% from better utilisation of the current infrastructure. The current electrical grids are facing huge challenges due to our change in behaviour to how energy in consumed, renewable energy sources becoming more popular and the ever increasing population, all against the back drop of sustainability goals. There is no doubt that huge investment is required within the grid's capacity but the role of innovation and new technologies will also play a crucial role in tackling this major problem. The panel discussion at the event brought to life the value that Cloud can play to drive real time data and analytics to make accurate, informed decisions. The main problem is the ability to access data and have confidence within the data as it is often fragmented, siloed and manual maintained via spreadsheets across multiple departments. The majority of our conversations here at D55 with current and new energy clients is all about the data and how we can centralise, catalogue, govern crucial information from across the business in order to make faster, more proactive decisions that have a positive impact for both the end customer and the employee. Further to this, our work often involves system integration which helps connection and information flow across a business, automatically updating systems with relevant information that is frequently changing. The energy sector wont be able to make best use of new innovation and technologies unless the data is viewed as a strategic asset. #cloud #dataeverything #systemintegration #D55 #energysector

“These [Green MegaCampuses] could include energy storage, hydrogen fuel cells, microgrids, enhanced geothermal energy, renewable generator fuel like hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to replace diesel, and eventually small modular reactors and fusion. “Clean energy zones could enable accelerated growth of Digital Infrastructure across the established markets of North America and Europe and allow the emerging markets of Africa, Latin America and India to scale faster,” the iMasons said in their 2024 annual report….“ Well that sounds great! But ask them about the “bridge” between now and 5 years from now (the earliest that infrastructure could be in place) for large scale, widespread use of hydrogen, SMRs, HVO fuel, etc. The bridge is natural gas and delayed retirement of coal fired power plants, that’s the dirty secret. OK now let’s integrate more facts into this discussion: Fact 1: Virginia Data Center Proposals https://lnkd.in/eFVRhh_V Fact 2: Regional Transmission Line Projects https://lnkd.in/eDpY3VtA Fact 3: Dominion's most recent supplemental presentation to give you an idea of what they've got in the pipeline over the next 5 years (and this doesn't include the numerous projects in NoVA!): https://lnkd.in/eGfBDX8i Fact 4: Dominion 2023 IRP: https://lnkd.in/eCfbPdXK The question we should be asking is are we ok with forfeiting any climate action progress, our water and air quality, our communities, and our hard earned income to subsidize their infrastructure through our electric bills so they can continue to build like crazy, rake in revenue, and work on solutions for the next 5 years or are we going to demand more government oversight now? #datacenters #sustainability #AI
