Never when we sat down for that coffee all those years ago did I think we would end up here. Very proud of all that we have achieved over the past two years, the incredible team we have and the wonderful group of clients we have built. Smartest, most genuine, hardworking bloke there is. Honour and privledge to learn and spend majority of most days with you! Could write a list as long as the Nile about what I’ve learnt from JB, here’s 5 points that first come to mind; 1. Listen, listen more, take notes, summarise in writing, engage any expert you can to upskill and better understand the problem, turn the world over to find the most powerful solution. 2. If you find yourself with a few spare minutes having finished a meeting early, driving or walking to lunch, spend this time calling your team members to check in, this will be invaluable to both you and them. 3. No matter how busy you are, always make the time to stay connected and engaged with your network, a quick text is all it takes. 4. Respect and celebrate the achievements of our peers, their success makes us better and drives us forward as an industry. The quote I love from JB most is, “there’s enough clients out there for everyone.” 5. Always remember, we aren’t saving lives. Your family and your health always come first. One of a kind JB. It’s okay to be proud of our achievements. It’s so damn hard to celebrate personal achievements without finding some fault in it. For others, we give compliments without even weathering a critique on how they did it. I am guilty of this and I am being particularly careful about the criticism I give myself or how I talk about my accomplishments, especially in front of my daughter. What have I achieved and not given myself the least bit the credit for until much later in life? I’ll name three: 1. I speak, read, and write 6 language, all before the age of 20. 2. I wrote my master’s thesis over a period of 4 years with a demanding full-time job, family obligations, and way too little sleep, and not once did I think it was time to give it up. 3. I solo-traveled and lived in various places around the world without hesitation and fear. Share your 3 achievements in the comments and let go of that obnoxious critic within too. The more advanced way to look at this challenge would be to look beyond male and female. We also need to look at personality type. At the moment a great percentage of those that achieve senior ranks whether male or female are target and standard focused with reputation and credibility sensitivity . That means they don’t focus on taking the people with them. The function of leading is therefore compromised as what they do well needs to be balanced with the skills of taking the people with you and introducing new ideas. In leadership you have to be people focused .(General Colin Powell and many others who understand what leadership is). The male and female thing is completely misleading. The targets in diversity, morally right of course, but also need to be linked to the outcome we seek, a balanced, efficient, unified organisarion.. You will notice there will always be adversity . However when in balance you can be unaffected, because the structure is strong and you have confidence in it. College of Policing .
