This research supports the effectiveness of?Catch Up Your Code?in swiftly and successfully identifying and filling literacy gaps. Decoding and spelling words both depend on knowledge of the alphabetic code. In the light of the changes NESA trying to make to how creative arts HSC subjects are assessed, I thought this quote and the article was an interesting perspective. I’d be interested to know others thoughts on this. “Why are subjects like PE and Art assessing written work at all? Data. The theory goes that in order to ensure kids can perform proficiently in NAPLAN writing, reading, grammar and spelling tests, they need to be practising these skills in every subject. Knowledge plays a critical role in reading comprehension. In fact, content-rich literacy programs successfully increase vocabulary, content knowledge, and test scores. So, ask Hugh W. Catts and Alan G. Kamhi, why not include literacy instruction in disciplinary instructional blocks? As the authors highlight, the READS Lab at Harvard University's MORE program, a science and social studies curriculum that complements regular ELA instruction, does just that—with significant and lasting results for student achievement. Dr. Timothy Shanahan maintains that while digital reading may be harder for some, it’s crucial for educators and researchers to focus on preparing students for success in the digital world. While acknowledging that people generally read less effectively on screens, he emphasises that digital reading is here to stay. In Vital Harmony Charlotte Mason looked at the world and saw that it was governed by universal laws, such as the law of gravity. Then she wondered. What if there were similar laws that governed the way people learn? If we knew what those laws were, we'd be able to pursue education along the most promising lines . She devoted her life to finding the key principles of education and then developing methods to make the most of them. The result is a comprehensive picture of living and learning that breathes life into education at every level--from babyhood to the adult years. It's not a rote system, but a flexible set of ideas that keep education in focus. These principles are for everyone concerned with teaching and learning.
