How do our learning experiences make people feel? I’ve just started this book: Unreasonable Hospitality, by Will Guidara. It’s all about the remarkable impact a sense of belonging can bring, and how offering ‘unreasonable hospitality’ puts people and connection at the centre of all we do. Guidara is adamant every industry can offer unreasonable hospitality. ??So I can’t stop thinking about how we can apply these ideas to teaching and learning. (And to international education. Because perhaps now more than ever…*sigh*…we need to take an unreasonably hospitable approach to the experiences our international students are having in Australia) How can we support a sense of belonging in our classes and institutions? Are we offering a genuine welcome and an authentic connection? Can we give learners more than they expect? Are our courses designed to support teachers to give their best, to really connect with students and adapt learning for them? To be creative and magical? “Myopia, being short-sighted” Good reflections with the AESE Business School PADE 53 group in Porto, on “seeing more” and avoiding myopia that can prevent us from seeing beyond our current situation by not detecting signs of change. I have really enjoyed the sessions learning from swedish companies, chocolate companies, ... how interesting the sessions become when the participants share their experiences. Let's do it more in companies, not just in business schools. It is not just about knowing a lot more about what we already know and successfully do, but about sharing experiences beyond our company that allow us to detect indications of where we can move forward.
