The recent report from HockeyStack has sparked an important conversation about how we approach B2B marketing. One of the key findings is that the number of "touchpoints" and "impressions" required to convert an MQL into a closed deal has increased from 2023 to 2024—showing a 9.5% rise in impressions and a 19.8% increase in touchpoints. This data echoes a familiar narrative: the complexity of B2B buyer journeys continues to increase. Additionally, it highlights that incremental gains from retargeting, remarketing, and omnichannel strategies are diminishing. But the real question is, do we truly need this data? Here are the concerns. ->The Flawed Idea of Linear Buyer Journeys This linear, cause-and-effect thinking mirrors outdated theories behind lead scoring and nurturing. The data focuses only on digital touchpoints, simply because they are easier to measure. We’re clinging to a model that doesn’t reflect how real decision-making happens in B2B. It’s like saying, “It takes 15 customer service calls to win customer trust.” But trust is complex—it’s shaped by experiences, needs, and context. ->Equating Path to Outcomes Phrases like “it takes X touchpoints” or “Y impressions” give the misleading impression that we can control the timing and decisions of entire customer organizations. In reality, B2B buying decisions are influenced by countless internal and external factors—many of which are beyond our control as marketers. Looking backward, sure, we can count the number of impressions or touchpoints, but that doesn’t mean those interactions were the deciding factor. Touchpoints are simply evidence of a journey already in progress, not the cause of its success. To me, this trend highlights a bigger issue: being “data-driven” has led organizations to put too much faith in such surface-level analytics around their go-to-market strategies. Numbers that don’t always tell the full story. Interestingly, the report was also promoted by Exit Five (link in comments), which is where I first came across it.
