Meaningful Participation matters for social change - and there's evidence for it! Get inspired by this innovative report produced by Closer Than You Think Collective and commissioned by Porticus. Link to "Expanding Our Understanding of Evidence for Meaningful Participation" below.
Excited to announce the release of our report on: "Expanding Our Understanding of Evidence for Meaningful Participation" -- collaborative effort commissioned by Porticus and produced with Closer Than You Think Collective. Our report tackles crucial questions: - Why does meaningful participation matter? - What counts as evidence of participation's impact on philanthropy and social change? - What gaps exist in the current evidence base? We've developed two innovative tools: 1?? Evidence Quality Rubric 2?? Inclusive Evidence Guidelines These tools aim to democratise philanthropy and transform power dynamics by valuing diverse forms of knowledge and lived experiences. Huge thanks to my brilliant co-authors Georgia Booth and Ruby Johnson, the Porticus team (in particular Dennis Arends) and our expert peer reviewers: Alexia Pretari, Boikanyo Modungwa, Cynthia Gibson, Matt Jackson, and Zoé VanGelder. Your insights have been invaluable! Download the full report and tools here: https://lnkd.in/gcewB7CM and also here: https://lnkd.in/gQnCEC7p

Meet our new community-elected Advisory Council Member, Rozella (Rozie) Kennedy! Story behind her name:? Rozella is the name of my paternal grandmother, and also my paternal aunt. They inspire my justice journey. I never met my grandmother, who died when my dad was a teenager... she had pneumonia, and the ambulance never came. My aunt Rozella died of COVID. Given that my maternal grandmother, Alice Green, died of congestive heart failure (which should not be a death sentence) at age 58, and my father died before age 60, I have a lot of fire in the belly for health/racial justice and poverty alleviation. All that she has accomplished: I have served as an Executive Director, a Philanthropy Executive, and a Mtkg and Development Director—managing, designing, monitoring, and producing public local to transnational performances, conferences, and events. I’ve led strategic turnarounds, community activation, participatory arts programming, people management and mentorship, and brand stewardship. I currently serve as Director of Impact and Equity for a global strategic advisory firm, working at the intersection of equity and justice, and creating systems to ensure that both internal culture and operations and external impact to our global philanthropic and humanitarian partners embrace co-creative, localized design and project execution principles. As creator of “Brave Sis Project,” and “Our Brave Foremothers” (Workman, 2023), I provide facilitations uplifting BIPOC she-roes and building allyship and power sharing. Where she is focusing her fire: Earlier in my career, I worked as an educator, in media, and organizational consulting. I’ve done a lot and seen a lot, and now I want to focus on giving back in the areas that are most existential to me: People, Community (not just US), Power, and Philanthropy. As a first-gen collegian and over the course of my multi-facetted career, I connect my own lived experience to the needs and realities of the localized champions working for equity, fairness, and access. #ocimpact #globalleaders #unconference #socent #nonprofitleaders #advisorycouncil

Diving into the intricate landscape of racial biases in U.S. philanthropy, we explore whether it merely mirrors societal trends or conceals deeper complexities. In pursuit of answers, we engaged in a thought-provoking conversation with Jeffery T. D. Wallace, the President and CEO of LeadersUp. As a cherished collaborator with our Equity at Work Council, Jeffery brings unique insights to this crucial discussion. Jeffery underscored a stark truth: tackling racial issues in philanthropy demands confronting the harsh reality that our nation's wealth is intricately linked with the pervasive influence of racism. This isn't just food for thought; it's an undeniable truth demanding recognition and action. However, acknowledging it is just the starting point. The real journey lies in building community and engaging our allies, not alienating them. It involves rallying our supporters, fostering genuine connections, and ensuring every voice is heard and amplified. With an unyielding dedication to these principles, we are not merely addressing these issues. We are boldly confronting and eradicating the shadow that racial capitalism casts over the realm of philanthropy. Continue on this journey with us: In the coming? weeks, we’ll introduce you to more of our amazing contributors through beautiful artwork created by Fernando Mari . These partners play a vital role in making our mission a reality. In the meantime, visit our website to take a closer look at how we're reshaping philanthropy for the better.? https://lnkd.in/eYYBu_DP #equityatworkcouncil #capitalism #reshapingphilanthropy

Leading with Purpose: A Conversation with Jessica Davis on Transforming Communities Through Collective Giving!!! Yesterday's mastermind session over lunch with Jessica Davis, CEO of the United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties, left me profoundly inspired. Her servant leadership approach to community and philanthropy is nothing short of transformative. Jessica's unwavering commitment to creating attainable and measurable impacts in our communities is a testament to the power of united efforts. Through her leadership, the United Way of Lake & Sumter Counties is more than just an organization; it’s a beacon of hope that empowers individuals, drives systemic change, and fosters a sense of belonging for all. The way Jessica connects philanthropy to real, tangible outcomes resonates deeply with me and aligns perfectly with my mission at The American Way, to Propel Equity Through Exposure and Barrier Elimination. We talked about the importance of collective giving, and how each of us can play a part in fostering a more equitable society. It’s not just about giving; it’s about giving with purpose, with intention, and with the knowledge that together, UNITED, we can create lasting change. Jessica’s leadership reminds me that the true essence of community lies in our shared responsibility to uplift and empower one another. I’m excited to continue building on these insights and aligning our efforts to drive impact in the communities we serve. Let’s unite our efforts to create a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous future for everyone. #ServantLeadership #CommunityImpact #Philanthropy #Equity #BarrierElimination #UnitedWayLakeandSumter #TheAmericanWay #Leadership #Diversity #Inclusion #CollectiveGiving #SocialImpact #Empowerment #EconomicMobility #Health #Education #Sustainability #GivingBack #CommunityDevelopment #FirstWatch #WomenWinning #PhilanthropyforAll
