At the America the Beautiful for All Coalition "New Era, New Leaders" conference in September, I led a discussion on "Shifting the movement: Tools to facilitate values-first conservation when power dynamics make it hard." WATCH THE FULL PANEL HERE: https://lnkd.in/eAB9i8Y9 The panel featured Jerry Otero, Grand Canyon Trust, Legislative and Policy Director; Starlyn Tourtillott Miller, Little Shell Chippewa tribal member/ Menominee & Mohican 1st line descendant; Adrian Angulo, Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project, Campaigns & Programs Director; and Sheila Babauta, Friends of the Mariana Trench. Some of the topics we discussed were: Community-Centric Conservation: Learn techniques for meaningful community engagement and participation in conservation decision-making. Discover methods to integrate local knowledge and priorities into project design and implementation. Addressing Historical Injustices: Explore frameworks for acknowledging and addressing the colonial legacy and past harms associated with some conservation efforts. Gain strategies for building trust and repairing relationships with marginalized communities. Intersectional Approaches: Understand how to develop conservation initiatives that consider multiple forms of oppression and marginalization. Our panelists will discuss tools for conducting intersectional analyses and creating more inclusive campaigns. Navigating Power Dynamics: Acquire practical advice for advocating for justice-centered approaches when faced with resistance from funders or organizational hierarchies. Learn effective communication strategies and methods for building coalitions to support equitable conservation.

At Moonjelly Foundation, we're pioneering a new era of conservation finance, inspired by the principles of trust and community. Our approach, reminiscent of the slow-food movement, focuses on building deep, personal relationships and reducing administrative burdens to empower grantees to focus on their crucial work. We're creating a Conservation Impact Network, connecting conservation organizations and community groups through trust-based relationships. This network is strengthened by our Pay It Forward Scaling, where partners support new members, enhancing our collective impact on conservation. Our efforts are already making waves in regions like the Cook Islands and Latin America, where traditional knowledge and conservation practices are being revitalized. We aim to grow an indigenously-led Conservation Impact Network, proving that trust and collaboration can lead to significant environmental progress. We invite you to be part of this transformative movement. Together, we can scale trust-based conservation to new heights. #ConservationFinance #Moonjelly #SustainableFuture #PayItForward
Funders often ask "How can you scale trust-based conservation when it requires so much time to build trust?" At Moonjelly Foundation, we are using Pay It Forward Scaling and Impact Network approaches to scale our work. Bryce Groark Linwood Pendleton 潘林木 Hans Henrik H. Our collective conservation work demands an equity lens. HECHO is proud to share the insights of a new report, “Changing the Landscape: Honoring Hispanic Heritage on Public Lands,” which amplifies Hispanic perspectives and advocates for equitable access to and representation within public lands. “We were never told that our stories mattered, and the stories of Hispanic and Latino connection to the landscape have been missing. They exist, and they need to be shared,” said Teresa Martinez, Executive Director of the Continental Divide Trail Coalition. This report, which models a community-led and community-derived model for land and water conservation, can serve as a roadmap for future conservation decisions–whether those be which public lands to preserve or how to manage public lands. ???? Honoring Teddy Roosevelt: Champion of Conservation ????? As I reflect on the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, I am inspired by his visionary leadership in conservation and natural resource management. Roosevelt’s dedication to preserving our nation’s natural treasures laid the foundation for modern environmental stewardship. Key aspects of Roosevelt’s legacy include: ? Private Resource Ownership: Advocating for responsible private land stewardship while also championing national parks and public lands. ? Role of Science: Emphasizing the importance of scientific research and data-driven decision-making in resource management. ? Integral Systems Approach: Recognizing outdoor resources as interconnected ecosystems requiring holistic management strategies. Roosevelt’s principles continue to guide us in balancing conservation with sustainable development. Let us celebrate his enduring impact and continue to uphold his commitment to preserving our natural heritage for future generations. #Conservation #EnvironmentalStewardship #TeddyRoosevelt #ResourceManagement #NationalParks #Sustainability #ScienceInConservation

On this Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor Florida’s Indigenous communities and their deep connection to our state’s waterways and ecosystems. Florida's state parks, like Jonathan Dickinson, which are caregivers to Florida’s first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Loxahatchee, are not just recreational spaces—they’re vital for preserving cultural and natural resources. As we reflect on Indigenous wisdom, let’s commit to protecting these precious resources: 1)Practice Responsible Recreation: Respect water sources and habitats when visiting parks. 2)Join Clean-Up Efforts: Participate in volunteer days to help maintain our waterways. 3)Support Indigenous Stewardship: Engage with Indigenous-led conservation initiatives. 4)Educate Others: Spread awareness about the importance of water conservation. Let’s honor Indigenous Peoples Day by safeguarding Florida’s natural beauty for generations! ???? #IndigenousPeoplesDay #WaterConservation #FloridaStateParks #Sustainability #CulturalHeritage

"New Era, New Leaders: 5 Years to 30x30" conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, hosted by America the Beautiful for All. #NewEraNewLeaders #AmericatheBeautifulforAll #NewEraNewLeadersConference Day 3 Recap: This conference was beyond informative and inspirational. Very happy to have gotten the chance to attend and share some words of wisdom on my LinkedIn. Huge shoutout to GreenLatinos for having me as a scholarship recipient. I learned about Urban Greening through some fellow attendees (special shoutout to Chistopher from Albuquerque) and hope to apply that knowledge back home with local parks projects I am working on as an Environmental Justice Committee Member for the Santa Rosa NAACP branch. At the speed talks at the start of the last, the panelists emphasized Social Justice as the vehicle for restoring ecosystems. The land back movement came from the front lines. Land back promotes the liberation of BiPOC communities, black reperations, and the health of Mother Earth. The first panel was titled, “Storytelling, Identity, and Culture in Conservation.” They opened with explaining the concepts of a dominant culture and doctrines of discovery. It is important to deconstruct dominant narrative and rebuild with community. Stories are the foundation of policy and education. Stories build narratives and narratives shitft power. I found the idea of private property being an owned paper that can be enforced by state violence as intriguing, especially since owning land was not something indigenous people believed in to my knowledge. Currency on narrative is meaning, not truth alone. When you share a story instead of stats, you retain almost 70% of what you heard as opposed to 10%. Vulnerability is power. In the last session, “Closing the gap to 30x30,” the activation of youth and local government were emphasized as high priority. Bringing legislators to local lands when asking for environmental support can be worth trying, especially if they are moderate. The economic value of ecotourism and potential green jobs is a fiscal draw to green support and investment as well.
