Data centers are uniquely positioned to benefit from the energy transition and the potential for power to flow bi-directionally because of longtime investments in always-on power. Traditionally, power flowed in one direction from the local utility to energy consumers. Today, power can flow through the electric grid and between an increasing number of decentralized renewable resources and electrical loads at the edge.

I am thrilled to share our latest publication in Cell Reports Physical Science, where we delve deep into the challenges facing the global smart metering infrastructure, the backbone of the smart grid. With billions invested worldwide, the promise of substantial savings to end-users through smart grid applications has been a key driver. However, our research uncovers a stark reality: despite significant investments, tangible benefits for customers remain elusive. ? In our recent Perspective, we examine the existing smart metering landscape, identifying low-resolution data collection and the lack of real-time communication as formidable barriers hindering the realisation of customer benefits. We then delve into the underlying reasons behind these shortcomings, emphasising the critical need for high-resolution data. ? But how can we overcome these challenges? We introduce a groundbreaking framework poised to revolutionise smart meter data management, leveraging existing hardware infrastructure. By addressing key issues in data collection, maintenance, communication, and storage, our proposed framework sets the stage for achieving high-resolution records.
