For an insightful look into the impact boards have on the success of companies, take a few minutes to read my partner and fellow member of Boyden's CEO & Board Services Practice, Dr. Keith D. Dorsey's piece on Human Capital in the boardroom. Diversty in multiple forms is an important component to a healthy board. Another take away is the good boards monitor their own health, check on their strengths and weakness, develop their own succession plans, and avoid becoming insular. Our ownership group used to be at the top of our website. Now we're at the bottom. And there's a good reason. In the end, this is about more than just optics. As business owners, we are here to support our staff— not the other way around. Look, this is a humbling job and I frequently find myself learning hard lessons. But one thing I figured out early was this: hire people that are either already better than you, or have the potential to be. And then support the heck out of those people. It's easy to put your ego in the driver's seat and take the mentality that everything runs through you. To be fair, there are a handful of people on this Earth that absolutely should do that. Most of us are not one of those people. I certainly am not. My knowledge and effectiveness has limits, limits that shouldn't be imposed on our business. By building a stronger pipeline of leadership, we can rise well above that level. Back to our website, the idea to rearrange our staff photos came from one of our clients. They mentioned it in a conversation with my business partner, Michael, who was big on the idea. He brought it up, explained the reasoning, and it was an easy decision from there. Yes, it's a small change, but it's a significant message. If this company's goal is sustained growth and success, we need to be fostering leadership internally. So there we are, the two company principals sitting at the very bottom of our staff list on our 'About Us' page. Happily at the bottom. Happily supporting our amazing team as they develop into the next generation, a much improved generation, of company leaders.

As business owners, embracing accountability is not just a duty; it's a cornerstone of effective leadership. Accepting this responsibility means clearly defining the roles and responsibilities within your organisation, including your own. This clarity is essential for executing strategies effectively and driving the business forward. When we talk about accountability, it's not just about overseeing operations; it's about being answerable for the outcomes. Owners must lead by example, showing a commitment to the organisation's goals and demonstrating the values they expect to see in their teams. Compensation for owners should reflect both their role in operations and their stake in ownership. This distinction ensures that rewards are aligned with both effort and results, reinforcing the principles of fairness and motivation across all levels of the company. Implementing these practices requires a mindset shift. As leaders, we must view ourselves not just as decision-makers but as pillars of the organisation's culture and success. By holding ourselves accountable, we set a precedent that encourages a culture of responsibility and excellence throughout the company. So, let's embrace our roles as leaders with the seriousness they deserve. By fostering accountability, not only do we enhance our own performance, but we also inspire our teams to strive for greater achievements, collectively driving our business towards long-term success. Commit today to defining clear roles and responsibilities, and inspire a culture of excellence and responsibility: https://lnkd.in/gD2U3CaJ #EOS #LeadWithAccountability #BusinessLeadership #DriveSuccess
