I am grateful to share a short reflection from my recent exchange semester at Suffolk University in Boston. Over the past five months, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in an academic environment renowned for its strong programme in business and law, and its diverse community. Deliberately, I selected courses in finance, politics and business law to broaden my knowledge and understanding in fields that interest me. It enabled me to undertake a variety of challenging and complex projects, such as analysing the potential structure of a future multipolar world order with a focus on emerging economies such as the BRICS countries, conducting an in-depth financial analysis on Palantir to develop strategies for managing FX exposures in their international subsidiaries, and constructing strategic financial portfolios for investors with consideration of government regulations and tax benefits. One frequently asked question about my experience was in regard to culture impact. Despite my extensive time spent in the United States before for travel, family visits and training with the junior Olympics team, I did encounter a form of positive shock or realisation. It was the realisation how differently professors were trying to support you to succeed. Receiving detailed feedback from professors at 4am on a Sunday and seeing extra effort being valued felt encouraging. Those circumstances pushed me to work even harder, to surpass the class expectations and seize every opportunity to absorb even more knowledge. My weekends were dedicated to finding new bookstores to further my learning even more, exploring the different parts of the city, participating in charity runs to give back and enjoying the local sports games such as ice hockey. Reflecting on these five months, here are my three key takeaways: 1. Be Openminded But Think Critically Be openminded to the culture, the people, the city, the country and their way of doing things. However, maintain a critical mindset to understand the benefits and limitations. Developing a balanced opinion often requires thoughtful reflection. 2. Work Harder Than Hard Although, new environments may be a perfect excuse to not give 100%, it’s also an opportunity to push your limits. Working hard, being disciplined and dedicated to my work made my experience even more enjoyable. 3. Always Try Everything Embrace the change rather than being stuck in your own comfort zone. My goal in the last 5 months was to find new ways to challenge myself, whether it was walking every street from both street sides (yes, one does see new things), trying all bakeries (even if that means running a half marathon) or doing things I've never done before. I thank all my professors in Boston who supported me the last five months.

The thing about academics thinking “I love this work more than anything” is a) I believe you but b) you don’t know what you don’t know. Leaving academia—any career change—is an act of hope for a better tomorrow, and faith that you can have these feelings about another job. It’s helpful to get more specific about what part of this work you love, what you don’t mind doing, and what you prefer to avoid in future. Because I’m willing to bet that not every minute of every day as a faculty member fills you with joy or deep appreciation for what’s going on. Doing that specifying is going to make it a lot easier to recognize what you want to keep in your career and what you’d be okay with jettisoning. The step after that (in addition to keeping the faith) is exploring in what other roles in what other places do folks experience these things. Because I ASSURE YOU that academia isn’t unique in giving you an opportunity to, for example - Mentor young people - Act as an expert advising policymakers - Write thoughtfully about important social issues - Conduct exacting science experiments - Prepare teaching materials that have an impact on learners - [Fill in your own key thing here] I can hear some of you right now: “Oh but I love everything about this. No other job has this balance of A, B, C.” Hold up. Because, again, you don’t know what you don’t know. And hey, it’s always possible another situation would actually be even better?for you and your family! Something different will be different, but that's true in academia as well. Every department, university, region is its own thing. If you’re feeling disrespected, undervalued, or simply exhausted by the demands of your current job it’s worth the effort to figure out whether you might be better served elsewhere. That doesn’t mean quitting tomorrow! (Unless you want to.) It?does?mean employing your critical thinking, information gathering, and analytical skills to your career instead of just your academic subject matter. Please do that. — ???? I'm Jen! I help professors, postdocs, and other PhDs ready to leave academia land meaningful jobs where they’ll be valued and respected. ?? In a recent post, Kristen Sterba, NAGAP president, reflected on trends in graduate enrollment (link in the comments). The trends are from graduate enrollment leaders and are similar to what the prospective student audience shares online. We explored how individuals think and feel about graduate enrollment and found three critical challenges they experience in the enrollment process. 1. Hurdles to entry. 2. The enrollment process itself 3. Cost, financial aid, and value Download our report and get strategies for taking action on these challenges. https://lnkd.in/gwbqJ6Jv

“Ang, why did you decide to pursue a Ph.D. in education?” ?? Great question ?? Roughly 1 in 10 Ph.D. graduates get a faculty position, but, we’re doing it anyway! Here’s why I decided to pursue a Ph.D. in education ?? 1. Opportunity to explore an area of study deeply ?? I’ve been interested in exploring education equity, policy, and systems since I’ve been young. Pursuing a Ph.D. allows me to explore answers and responses to my enduring questions that I couldn’t answer any other way. 2. Space to research ?? I LOVE research and data. I love going in depth on topics I’m passionate about through qualitative studies, literature reviews, case interviews, etc. I believe in the power of elevating stories and lived experiences as data, and I want to contribute to that. 3. Career outcomes ?? While I certainly have goals of being a full-time faculty member in an education, organizational change, and/or leadership program, I’m also interested in a senior leadership role in student affairs, consulting, industry research, EdTech, etc. Pursuing my Ph.D. will help open doors for me. 4. Position & time in my life ?? I know several peers who are pursuing their Ph.D. part-time while they work full-time. I don’t want to go that route. I am grateful to have the means and footing to pursue my degree full-time before starting a family or planning for my and my partner’s futures. 5. Learning is meaningful to me ?? I consider myself an enduring learner, through and through. I appreciate the opportunity to LEARN as my full-time work. My program has so many opportunities for me to explore, engage with new ideas, and collaborate with fellow students. I’m so excited for it.

Reflecting on My Doctoral Journey As I close this chapter and officially add "Dr." to my name, I can't help but reflect on the journey that brought me here. It has been a path filled with challenges, milestones, triumphs, and immeasurable growth—both personally and professionally. There were moments when the weight of research, deadlines, and countless revisions felt overwhelming. Sleepless nights became the norm, and self-doubt often crept in. Yet, each obstacle became a stepping stone, pushing me to dig deeper, think broader, and persevere. The milestones along the way—whether it was QRM approval, getting IRB approval, or defending my dissertation—served as powerful reminders of the progress being made. These victories were not just academic; they represented the dedication, resilience, and passion that fueled this journey. But perhaps the most significant part of this experience has been the growth it spurred within me. I've become more than just an expert in my field—I’ve become a stronger, more resilient individual. The relationships I've built, the knowledge I've gained, and the perspectives I've embraced have all shaped me into the person I am today. To everyone who supported me—my family, friends, colleagues, and mentors—thank you. This achievement is as much yours as it is mine. Here's to new beginnings, continued learning, and the exciting journey ahead! #DoctoralJourney #EdD #Resilience #Growth #Milestones #Gratitude

As this academic year draws to a close, I am filled with immense pride reflecting on the learning journeys of our students. This year has been a profound one, marked by challenges overcome and triumphs celebrated - all underpinned by a spirit of creativity and innovation. I am delighted to share the KLB Prep Term 3 Innovation Summary video, which was created to give a powerful platform for our Year 4 and Year 5 students and shine a spotlight on the remarkable progress made throughout the year using only student-voice. All are volunteers and talk in the moment so eloquently about their learning. I am very grateful to the comms team for putting this together, especially since it was a bit of a surprise to see it published in the Kellett Dragon Magazine! This video reflects the significant growth and development achieved by our students as well as the continued evolution and success of the Innovation Programme Kellett School, The British International School in Hong Kong. It provides a vivid representation of the remarkable strides made by our young learners as they shaped their own learning journeys through creativity, critical thinking and a passion for positive change. ?? Here are the Big Questions our students had been discussing: Year 4 - How does innovation drive progress and positive change in our world? ???? Year 5 - What is the the future of farming and food production? ???? Year 5 - How can business balance sustainability and profitability, and what are the benefits and challenges of doing so? ???? This was the first time that I was able to hand full control of the teaching and learning over to my Year 4 colleagues following a robust collaborative planning process and mini CPD sessions. Listening to our young learners openly share their perspectives, deep knowledge, and passion for positive change, I can see the team did a marvelous job in delivering and developing an innovative approach to their humanities teaching! ?? Overall, I am proud to have played a role in empowering these young minds, fostering their ability to think critically, problem-solve, and create solutions for a better world. Witnessing their growth and journey as captured in the innovation video has been the greatest reward of this year. As we bid farewell to this academic year, let us carry forward the lessons learned, the progress made, and the growth experienced. By continuing to embrace innovation, empower our students, and cultivate a love of learning and global citizenship, we will shape a future where our students are prepared to lead the way. Roll on next year! #CelebratingStudentInnovation #GlobalCitizenship
