I want to talk about careers, specifically in the games industry. Did you know that there's more to the games industry than just art, design, and programming? Really, there’s a whole lot more. CIG is unique in that we possibly display the widest array of careers needed in the games industry under one roof. Every career is crucial to the development of our product. You don’t need to be a wizard at coding, the Da Vinci of anatomy, or the Ive of design. Sometimes, you can be that one person who just goes out of their way to make everyone’s working day that much better—like Ashley McGovern. The point is, there is a place for everyone in games, no matter where you are from or what your passion is. It's all about perspective. The next 12 months are going to be our biggest yet, and I want to show the next generation where they fit in the games industry. Everything we have been saying is true And Ubisoft employees confirm it I've noticed a lot observing the game industry A majority of my posts discuss the negatives of it However, the more I learn, the worse I realize things are A channel on YouTube, Legendary Drops, validates everything - Safe content created to not offend players or developers - Employees offended by emojis in communication - Characters being made purposefully ugly - Management brushing off feedback Here's the part that concerns me Management is passively aggressive about removing talented, higher-paid employees, for cheaper under skilled, unexperienced management Senior developers are being pushed out in favor of junior developers, and then promoted to senior positions after a few years, even though they are still inexperienced This is what I mean when I say incompetent people On all levels Ubisoft pushes out actual, capable talent In favor of obedient, less qualified, DEI hires As a result, we get 4 under-performing piles of horse crap Here's something I'm still figuring out How exactly is the recruitment process handled?

Last week’s news of 650 layoffs at Activision Blizzard hit me hard. My phone and DMs lit up first thing in the morning as the news broke. Many of those impacted are my friends and former colleagues. Heck, I hired many of them during my stint there: 2015-2020. To say I know how they are feeling is dead on. I, too, was unceremoniously laid off by AB back in 2020. It sucked. My biggest worry as the primary breadwinner for my family: how am I going to tell my wife about this? I waited hours for her to get home. I paced. I did jumping jacks. I did push-ups. I cleaned. I raided the fridge and liquor cabinet. I cried. My two biggest pieces of advice for the 650: 1) You have an unusually, long journey ahead. The market has changed drastically since 2020. I found multiple new sources of income within a few days. Please prepare yourself physically and mentally for an extended job search of at least 6+ months. 2) Things will get better. They will. Like Gandalf falling in the mines of Moria…there will be periods of darkness….but you will get through this…and you will emerge greater and stronger than ever!! The pink slip is just one piece of paper on your journey!! Stay strong! Stay motivated! And never be ashamed to ask for help! Fellowship and community will get us through this storm ?? #650Strong

Stories of game developers getting into the industry come in all shapes and sizes. I’ve seen some land their first jobs at Activision, Epic Games and Nintendo. I’ve seen others land roles at smaller companies and/or temporary contract roles. ? I’ve seen some quit. They never got to have a game dev story unfortunately. ? My story involved being self taught for 9 months. Then going through a boot camp for about 3 – 4 months. Landing my first job at the 1 year mark, and not directly in games but in enterprise work creating VR/AR applications in the government space. ? What will your story be? Do I have to be a #gamer to get a job in the #gamingindustry? This is a question I get a lot especially from people already working in other industries like #professionalservices, #lawyers, #management graduates and others. The answer is not really. Especially if you are targeting roles in domains like: ??Finance ??Administration ??Law ??Operations ??Project Management ??HR ??Graphic design and many more. BUT the truth is that once you get in the industry you will be amazed by the creativity ?? passion ?? innovation ?? fun and playful atmosphere ?? ALL AROUND YOU! Inevitably you will be drawn to play games with colleagues at the office, participate in #gamejams, get all the updates on game industry news. You will discover a whole new world where you will feel you belong in, even though you might never have imagined it. This has been and continues to be my experience working in the #gamedev industry.
