?? Many European cities are characterized by a museum quarter and Rotterdam is no exception but can be considered a late bloomer. This year marks the centenary of the Land of Hoboken, which is a part of the city’s Museumpark. ??? For a long time, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was the cultural beacon in an area that used to be a private estate, but the early 1990s changed that with three consecutive openings that turned it into a cultural hotspot. ??Kunsthal Rotterdam (1992) ??Chabot Museum (1993) ??Nieuwe Instituut (1993) ?? The Museumpark will be the central location of the annual Rotterdam Architectuur Maand taking place in June. A route that zigzags through the area takes visitors to various installations and interventions, including a bridge, a temporary observation tower, and an exhibition about the city’s green future. ?? Following the 2019 #HeritageAlert, ICOMOS, ICOMOS Danmark and ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on #20thcenturyheritage (ISC20C) welcome recent indications that plans for the demolition of the internationally recognised modernist #VikingShipHall of the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde have changed. ??The winning design of the architectural competition proposes a separate new hall with modern exhibition facilities for the 5 Viking shipwrecks, while the old hall is to be preserved, although partly altered and used for public events. Another important feature of the winning proposal is the transformation of the surrounding landscape to withstand the regular flooding from the Roskilde fjord. ? The funding to conserve the historic hall has not yet been secured: the approach to the future use of the original Viking Ship Hall and the recognition of the site’s cultural significance will be important factors as the project progresses. ?? The design of the AFRICAN MUSEUM OF THE FUTURE, LAGOS, serves a dual purpose: to showcase and preserve the community's rich cultural heritage and to act as a catalyst for tourism and economic growth. This project aims to provide a dynamic space for education, entertainment, and cultural exchange, featuring artefacts, artworks, and exhibits from diverse cultures worldwide. Concept Development: “Afrofuturistic architecture is the fictional futuristic rebirth and renaissance of traditional African architecture infused with advanced science and technology,” by Emmanuel Ogundiran, 2023 This concept provides a unique departure from conventional designs, incorporating futuristic elements while staying deeply rooted in the continent's cultural heritage. Utilizing both tangible and intangible African methods alongside indigenous materials, the museum aims to be a beacon of Afrofuturistic architecture—symbolizing a futuristic rebirth and renaissance of traditional African architecture. Form Development: - The four isolated forms represent THE PEOPLE, THE ART, THE SPIRITS and THE PERFORMANCE THEATRE. This creates four different entry access to each building therefore controlling the pedestrian movement efficiently. - While this form choice decision has many practical benefits, like better natural lighting, all-round aeration and circulation, and high energy efficiency, the unique cones reflect and pay homage to the early stages of precolonial African Architecture, like the traditional Musgum buildings in Cameroon, the local homes in Ethiopia and other dome-traditional huts found around Africa. - As done in Yoruba Architecture and many other tribes in Africa, the courtyard is a sustainable and cost-efficient way to increase the overall comfort and lighting levels in a building. Though the courtyard is covered with a transparent material to allow natural light, the top brim of the building provides a clerestory to allow air and enhance the stack effect principle. - To increase accessibility from within each mass, three interconnecting sky bridges were added on three different floor levels. This will significantly improve pedestrian traffic in all buildings. - The African mother’s wrapper is widely known to be iconic and it symbolises the motherly intimate care and unifying bond between the mother and her child. Just as the mother uses the native African fabric material to unify and hold the child onto her body, fluid bamboo panels are used to bind the four isolated forms into a single harmonized entity. Therefore, brings a sense of a traditional community. Real Estate Interesting Fact - Most Beautiful Modernist Buildings in the World: Palácio do Congresso Nacional (Brasilia, Brasil) Constructed in the center of the country in 1956, Palácio do Congresso Nacional was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Located in the the Three Powers Plaza, which represent the three branches of government, Palácio do Congresso Nacional symbolizes the legislative body, congress. Created ex nihilo in the ’50s, Brasilia was a collaborative effort by urban planner Lucio Costa (layout) and Niemeyer (buildings). Now a World Heritage Site, the city is described by UNESCO as a “singular artistic achievement, a prime creation of the human genius, representing…the living expression of the principles and ideals advanced by the Modernist Movement.” https://lnkd.in/eivU-FZt.

I was struck by this quote from Javier Sainz de los Terreros of the Museo Nacional del Prado when speaking about museum patrons at the NEXTIN Summit in Madrid: “They are now empowered”, he said. “They?want?to take part in decision making and effect change. Museums have now become listeners.” This sums up the shift as we move from a content-centric world to a community-centric world. It's no long just about just creating content for audiences to passively consume. It's now about creating spaces where fans can come together, connect with each other, and actively shape the experience. Of course, creating this space is a lot easier if you already have a museum. But just providing a space isn't enough. You have to design it to facilitate connections, not just for consumption. GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA (1983) https://lnkd.in/esSAhwYC This proposal revitalizes the city's downtown area by reusing a distinguished, but now vacant, former government building and by adapting a number of abandoned or underused neighboring structures for additional cultural functions. The main 1908 Beaux-Arts building is upgraded to meet codes and programmatic requirements. A relocation of the entrance from the closed side of the U-shaped building to the open court-yard establishes a direct physical relationship between the museum and its surroundings while creating a single, unified entrance. Covering the court-yard, a translucent inclined plane of stairs has an opening at its center that leads to the Grand Foyer which is a shared space for the different departments. Water descends slowly and evenly from the top of the stairway along a channel carved into the plane, leaving a clear pedestrian path for those walking up the stairs. This water is, in fact, the very water used for the air-conditioning system. In this way, the need for an unsightly cooling tower has been eliminated and this silent cascade becomes the focal point of the city's newest public space.
