Advanced materials and additive manufacturing (AM) – also known as #3Dprinting – are some of the best tools in our toolbox to accelerate our progress toward commercial fusion power. As TAE Project Engineer Vincent Pilard shared at this year’s Global AM Summit, our successful integration of AM has been key to solving fusion engineering challenges quickly and sustainably. “The global energy demand is on course to double by 2050 – fusion is capable of sustaining the planet for thousands of years, safely delivering environmentally responsible baseload power,” Pilard presented at the NAMIC Singapore event. “Leveraging AM optimizes our capability to build components with complex geometries and develop engineering solutions with high-performance materials.”

To date, GA-ASI has developed over 350 flight-qualified AM parts and produces over 7,500 production AM parts annually that have successfully completed over 300,000 combined flight hours. The company expects its AM growth rate to rise from 15 to 25 percent per year. ? "We demonstrated to ourselves, then to our management, and later to key customers, the many, often compounding benefits that additive technology can bring to programs, not just during the prototyping phase but also as low-rate initial production gets underway," explains Fournier, GA-ASI senior manager for AM and the AM Center of Excellence. The #3DPrinting Industry is taking FOREVER ?? The #additivemanufacturing industry often disappoints investors because its projections don't match the reality. Why? Because you can't just switch a part to 3D printing overnight. Most parts need to be re-engineered and re-certified for the process—application by application. This painstaking work means slow progress unless you have a clean-sheet design, which doesn’t happen often. When was the last large commercial airframe launched? ?? That’s why new entrants like SpaceX can incorporate additive faster—they’re starting from scratch, building designs with 3D printing in mind from the beginning. It’s rare to see incumbents pull it off, so it’s even more impressive when they do. ?? Huge kudos to Steve Fournier and the team at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems for successfully getting 350 applications in the air! ?? Getting an organization to buy in the way GA has is no small feat. You have to start convincing folks with seemingly small things, like tooling, which has saved GA $mn's. And then deal with production applications of increasing criticality. It's an insane amount of strategic work to get organizations on the same page. I saw the likes of Werner Stapela do it at Danfoss, Dr. Melissa Orme and now Steve Fournier. ?? Truly honored to support these journeys with Authentise. #3DPrinting #AdditiveManufacturing #ManufacturingInnovation #CleanSheetDesign #Engineering #TechInvesting #InnovationLeadership #SupplyChainOptimization #AirborneInnovation #GA #AdditiveJourney

?? Accelerate Your Development Cycle with Advanced Engineering ?? In today's competitive landscape, leveraging advanced engineering practices is crucial for accelerating the development cycle and achieving breakthrough innovations. At Mecca, we utilize cutting-edge engineering methodologies and tools to streamline our processes, enhance efficiency, and deliver exceptional results. Here’s one of the many ways advanced engineering can revolutionize your development cycle: ?? Value Added through FEA: Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a one of the many tools that allows us to simulate and analyze the behavior of structures and components under various conditions. By applying FEA, we can predict how a solution will perform under a wide range of loads, ensuring reliability and durability prior to the development of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Through simulating real-world conditions early in the development process, FEA allows us to detect potential issues and weaknesses within the design before they become costly problems. This proactive approach not only reduces development time but also minimizes material waste and costs associated with trial-and-error testing. At Mecca, we are committed to using advanced engineering tools like FEA to drive innovation and excellence. By integrating FEA into our development cycle, we support our partners in delivering high-quality solutions faster and more efficiently. - プロトタイピングから量産への移行時に同一の結果を提供する一貫した品質保証 - AM業界の課題は標準化の欠如による信頼性と一貫性への懸念 - Materialiseの目標はデータ共有と透明性を通じた業界全体の標準化の促進である - 長期的な展望として、AMにおける普遍的な標準企画の確立と企業のリスク認識の解消が必要で、データとプロセスの共有による一貫性の証明がポイント https://lnkd.in/gBV4a4GW Gert Brabants, Director of Manufacturing at Materialise, discusses the difference between prototyping and series production in Additive Manufacturing (AM), and the importance of process control and data sharing in AM. In summary: "Building trust in additive manufacturing (AM) through transparency of process control". - The difference between prototyping and mass production is the importance of consistency (repeatability) between orders. -Transparency of process control and data sharing are key to creating trust in AM, - Materialise has worked to accumulate a 'data lake' of process control data over the past 5-10 years. Designers benefit from the availability of actual performance data such as density and tensile properties. - As a process control document, it fixes and manages key process parameters as an internal ISO standard. - Consistent quality assurance that provides identical results when moving from prototyping to mass production. - AM industry challenges are reliability and consistency concerns due to lack of standardisation - Materialise's goal is to promote industry-wide standardisation through data sharing and transparency. - Long-term vision: establishing universal standards in AM and eliminating companies' perception of risk - Action needed: prove consistency through data and process sharing
