Yesterday, I got caught up thinking about something I read. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen the claim that “three wears” is a goal for a brand. #Fastfashion thrives on producing and consuming #clothing at a rapid pace, with little thought to durability, so encouraging customers to wear items more than three times feels like a bare minimum. That number seems absurdly low to me—my partner has been begging me to toss a The North Face T-shirt I’ve been wearing for nearly 20 years, there is a great video somewhere of my red TNF shirt climbing a seemingly impossible rock climb in the front range called "Cheating Reality"...just saying, it's famous—but it speaks to the challenge of shifting consumer habits. At least some brands, like Patagonia, Levis’Store, H&M, and PACSUN, are taking steps with recycling programs and incentives to return used clothing for reuse or repurposing. As I mulled this over, my brain went way out in another direction: “Why do black and white pair so well as a color scheme?” - yes, I know, that's how it works sometimes, but, It was a simple question, that led me into the depths of Google Scholar. Turns out, black and white work together so well because of psychology, perception, and culture. They’re high-contrast colors, making them easy to process and visually striking. Humans naturally seek balance, and the stark contrast feels harmonious. Add in cultural symbolism—good vs. evil, night vs. day, yin vs. yang—and the simplicity of black and white as “non-colors” that reduce cognitive load. Decades of pairing them in formal wear, printed text, and design have also cemented their timeless appeal. And that brings me back to fast fashion. Just as black and white have become ingrained in our culture as timeless and classic, we need to embed sustainability into how we think about clothing.
