In the business world, emotions are often seen as a drawback. They can lead to perceptions of us being: → overly feminine, thus less capable → hypersensitive, thus less resilient → vulnerable, thus less decisive Yet, imagine facing a lion in the wild, would FEAR make you a fool or a coward? Nature disregards appearances; it primes us for SURVIVAL. Next time you find yourself taking it personally when someone at work lashes out at you, take a moment to confront your fears as if facing a lion. The world has gotten very noisy. As a result, we’ve all become very busy. A lot more commitments, events, projects, side hustles, etc. And for some people, that’s a gift. For others? Not so much. I googled the top 3 personality types and got these (oversimplified) definitions: Introvert: A shy, reticent person Extravert: An outgoing, overtly expressive person Ambivert: A person who feels comfortable in social situations but also enjoys time alone Where do you fall on this scale? ?? TRUE CONFESSION: People tend to think I’m an extravert but I’m an ambivert! But if you’re an introvert, you may find that people speak over you at meetings or simply forget you’re there. That’s a mistake because introverts are often deep thinkers who could bring MORE to the table when given the chance. It also compelled Maryann Lazzeri and I to choose Susan Cain’s “The Power of Introverts” as our next selection for the CxXchange book club (11/11 at 6:30pm ET). Susan shares her unique point-of-view and packs in a lot of insights about introverts in her 19-minute TED Talk. We cannot wait to unpack this topic and engage with the CS community about how to wield introversion as a strength and empower friends and colleagues to be heard and included.
