Our Show & Tells are back ?? ?? Show & Tells are an initiative where team members share knowledge on any topic they're passionate about or have expertise in, helping us learn from each other and grow together. The first Show & Tell of the new season was kicked off by our Vera Schwarz. As a recruiter, the topic of #bias is something that is very close to her heart. It turns out that our decision making can be reeeeeally bad - and so, she wanted to educate us on how to catch and mitigate the unconscious biases we all have as humans! Here are the key takeaways from her presentation: ?? Understanding Implicit and Explicit Bias Biases can be?explicit?(conscious and deliberate) or?implicit?(subconscious and automatic). Implicit biases are mental shortcuts that influence our decisions without us realizing it. ?? Dual Process Theory Our brains make decisions using two systems:?System 1 is the unconscious part of our brain which makes quick, automatic decisions (this is where implicit biases live!), and?System 2, which is slower, deliberate, and requires conscious thought. Understanding this theory helps us to understand the importance of using System 2 to pause, reflect, and catch biases that arise from automatic decisions made by System 1. ?? Practical Strategies The first step to overcoming implicit bias is becoming aware of it. By educating ourselves and learning to recognize when bias might be influencing our decisions, we can make more objective, fair choices. One simple question to ask yourself is: "Are my thoughts based on facts, or are they assumptions? Thanks for sharing Vera ? #LifeAtTactile #showandtell
