TAAF, Palo Alto High School ASB, and Third State Books brought together members of Palo Alto’s AAPI community for an important discussion about youth mental health at Palo Alto High School. At this event, we explored the emotional well-being of young people–a subject that has often gone unspoken or carried a stigma in our community. TAAF CEO Norman Chen spoke on the panel alongside Dr. Bina Patel, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Stanford’s Vaden Health Center, noted journalist Dion Lim, and Garry Tan, CEO of Y Combinator and Founder of Initialized Capital. The panel, introduced by Palo Alto Mayor Greer Stone, tackled topics including the mental health impacts of the model minority myth, the challenges of balancing academic and career success while prioritizing mental health, and the need for better intergenerational understanding of mental health issues. We were pleased to have a full auditorium of parents, students, and community members join us—many of whom shared afterwards that it was the first time they’d ever witnessed a public conversation about mental health in the AAPI community. The mental health and well-being of our community is a priority for TAAF. Later this year, TAAF will be releasing a first-of-its-kind national study of AANHPI youth and the mental health landscape. Our hope is that this study allows us to better understand the factors that impact the mental health of AANHPI youth, and help find solutions that will support them in developing into healthy young adults.

Acting on the evidence base and identified need as an EMHP?? A key principle of CYP IAPT is accessibility. Knowledge of services and difficulty accessing services are a significant barrier to help-seeking in children and young people (Salaheddin & Mason, 2016). Young people experience unfamiliarity and insecurity with issues related to mental health and help-seeking (Westberg et al., 2022). Not only does the evidence base recommend increasing accessibility of mental health support, the voice of young people in the school also indicated this. 443 voices were heard out of 995 on roll through a questionnaire completed during an audit of mental health provision and perspectives. Student voices indicated the increased need for visible and easy access to mental health and well-being support so they can know how to access support within and external to school. ACTION: Seen in the photo attached is a help seeking poster I created alongside the senior mental health lead for one of the secondary school work in. This was created as a direct result of the audit and evidence based recommendations. Salaheddin, K., & Mason, B. (2016). The Centre for Mental Health has released a new report on the mental health barriers to school that so many children face. They found that: ?? Absences are rising amidst escalating rates of mental health problems, with long waiting lists and rejected referrals preventing them from engaging fully with education. ?? Absences have spiked alongside rates of poverty, where families struggling with the cost of living may be unable to afford the basics for their children to attend school, such as school uniform, transport or food. ?? Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are much more likely to miss school, exacerbated by long waits for diagnosis and a lack of support to meet their needs. We must address the root cause of absences, rather than penalising families. This comes as new research from Action for Children shows challenges outside of school are impacting nine pupils in every class. The barriers to education children face are complex, and we welcome these two publications. As outlined in our new manifesto, we want to see a renewed focus on early intervention and prevention to help tackle these challenges. July is #MinorityMentalHealthMonth, and youth #MentalHealth continues to be a topic of great importance among public health professionals. Our commitment to improving the mental health of historically underserved students recently took center stage at the National Network of Public Health Institutes Annual Conference in NOLA. Courtney Stefan, Manager of IBX Foundation Initiatives, presented "Student Mental Wellness: A Social Impact Model in Education," which highlighted the Foundation's support of an ongoing Philadelphia school-based mental health model developed with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and piloted at Girard College. School-based mental health care is emerging as a critical component in assessing and addressing the well-being of today's youth. Meeting children where they are and providing the right level of support and intervention is key. When mental health care is prioritized within school communities, it strengthens students' well-being inside the classroom and beyond.

The findings from our project CESAME: Culturally Engaged and Sensitive Approaches to Mental health Education now published in the Health Education Journal: https://lnkd.in/eSv4W6WM From (re)framing language and conceptualising #mentalhealth, #ethnic and #cultural #identity and #school #transitions from a lived experience perspective to enabling #genuine #participation and #codesign with young people across all stages of the work – including development of the proposal and co-authoring of this article with a peer researcher (young person with lived experience) and everything in between – the project and team truly embraced the ethos of collaboration and mutual learning across academic, practice and lived experience expertise. We will be reflecting on this process specifically in an upcoming publication. In the meantime, the findings here will be of interest to #practitioners, #policymakers and #researchers interested in supporting mental health in schools, intersectional experiences of transitions from primary to secondary school, and lived experiences of young people from ethnically diverse groups during this transition. Our children are facing a mental health crisis. 1 in 5 youth experience mental health challenges, yet lack of access to support leaves them struggling in silence. This crisis is further compounded by racial disparities within our education systems. Students of color are disproportionately affected by mental health challenges, yet often lack access to culturally responsive support and resources. This continues to have a?devastating impact on their academic success, well-being, and future potential. Educators and mental health professionals within schools are on the frontlines, without the critical resources to provide the needed support. Every child deserves to feel valued and supported in their learning environments, and all other places. That's why we're launching the “Our Right to Smile” campaign, aimed at providing critical resources and support to educators, school-based mental health professionals, and youth. To mark the start of the European Mental Health Week, the European Commission has published two new sets of guidelines dedicated to well-being in schools. The new guidelines, presented by Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Iliana Ivanova during the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council, propose a comprehensive and integrated approach to school wellbeing, with a focus on prevention. "The reports on the worsening state of well-being and mental health of students and teachers are worrying," said Commissioner Ivanova. "I am confident that these comprehensive guidelines can make a difference in schools across Europe. Together we are laying the foundations for a healthier and more inclusive educational landscape." The guidelines emphasise the importance of providing teachers and educators with additional resources to help them take care of their own well-being. They also highlight the need to create strong support networks involving local stakeholders such as health and social services, universities, youth organisations and families. https://lnkd.in/eZkVTdZT

Research indicates that school refusal can have a significant impact on a young person's learning, development and health – including into adulthood. Research also shows that early intervention is effective, and can help affected students rebuild a sense of school belonging. We've teamed up with young people, families, research leaders and clinical experts to produce two new resources to help address the rising issue of school refusal. "The start of the school year can be a particularly daunting time as students encounter significant changes such as new teachers, classmates and schools," says Prof. Rosemary Purcell, Orygen's Chief of Research Translation. "With that change comes an increased chance of anxiety that can lead to school refusal." Access the free toolkit: ?? For school staff: bit.ly/3SAE7ZG ??
