Development news: Building for the future: how tech and teamwork drive sustainable retrofitting Marking a major milestone for the HS2 London Tunnels project, the giant Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named Sushila, reached the Green Park Way vent shaft in Ealing breaking through into a reception can filled with foam concrete. The innovative method has been adopted due to high water pressure in the ground on the site. It allows the TBM to maintain its pressure while sealant can be applied from the tunnel lining to prevent water ingress. Jonathan Morrison at The Times, in his response to last night's?RIBA Stirling Prize result, poses the question?whether the Elizabeth Line is ‘engineering or architecture’ - as if a built environment project has to be one or the other. The truth is, we need?infrastructure schemes to be the best of both, and we are pleased to see this acknowledged so publicly by this award.? We specialise in infrastructure, working almost exclusively at the interface of buildings and civil infrastructure design, not only in rail but also in water, power & energy and highways.? ? Good infrastructure design finds ways to go beyond a project’s core purpose to integrate it within its surroundings and society. Even the most inhospitable places can present design opportunities that meet engineering requirements while simultaneously enhancing the human experience and the natural environment. Experience has taught us that it takes a combination of architectural thinking (in its broadest sense for both landscape and buildings) and civil engineering to find the sweet spot that unlocks opportunities for better design and innovation.? ? Together with engineering teams, decisions made on large-scale infrastructure projects must keep pushing for better outcomes in terms of durability, functionality and aesthetics. For underground tunnelling infrastructure, this is key, as the result of decisions made early in a design process will undeniably influence the lives of people on the surface for a century, at least.? ? Engagement in a multi-disciplinary team focused on defining principles and objectives also adds value - ensuring that future changes are minimal, leaving a tangible legacy.? ? The architectural design of the 10 central London Elizabeth line stations was achieved through the collaboration and coordination of a wider Crossrail client architectural team which included Grimshaw, John McAslan + Partners, Weston Williamson + Partners, Hawkins\Brown, Aedas, WilkinsonEyre, BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd), Adamson Associates Architects, Allies and Morrison, and Fereday Pollard.? ? A huge congratulations to SYSTRA and Mott MacDonald for winning the Profession Category Award for their exceptional work on the A452 Overbridge at Balsall Common, a vital part of the 90km Midlands section of High Speed Two (HS2). This incredible structure, the highest and longest integral box structure along the entire length of HS2, exemplifies engineering innovation and collaboration. Delivered by an Integrated Project Team, the overbridge features cast in-situ side walls, a base slab, and a deck formed using precast pretensioned T beams, seamlessly integrated with a cast-in-situ deck slab and end diaphragms. By prioritizing construction considerations, the team successfully delivered a complex and groundbreaking solution for this key infrastructure project. A remarkable achievement that sets new standards for the profession! ???? Judges Comments: This structure was delivered by an Integrated Project Team engaged on the 90km Midlands section of High Speed Two (HS2). The structure will carry the realigned A452 dual carriageway over the HS2 tracks at Balsall Common, near Solihull in the West Midlands. The overbridge is an integral box structure, comprising cast in-situ side walls, base slab and deck formed using precast pretensioned T beams, further integrated by a cast-in-situ deck slab and end diaphragms. This complex structure is unique and is the highest and longest box structure on the overall length of HS2. Constructions are busy building a box structure to make room for HS2 trains to pass under a dual carriageway. About 120 long beams to form the top of the structure. ?? Throwback to Postmark, London: A Landmark in Substructure Protection ?? Reflecting on one of our standout projects, we revisit the transformation of the historic Royal Mail sorting office at Mount Pleasant, Farringdon, London. ?? The Challenge: A vast basement two levels below ground requiring comprehensive protection. ?? The Solution: We utilized Maxiprufe 2000, Maxiprufe Plus, and Hydrocrete Watertight Concrete to deliver robust protection. Outcome: This 6-acre site resulted in a 214-apartment complex called West Central 1 (WC1). Subsequently, an additional 681 new homes were created, over 20,000 sq. ft of commercial space, and a host of new public spaces, showcasing the unique positioning across two London postcodes: WC1 and EC1.
