“Like fighting an addiction, being an #antiracist requires persistent self-awareness, constant self-criticism, and regular self-examination.” This quote by Ibram X. Kendi underscores the need to be aware of the subtle, insidious nature of our assumptions and stereotypes of others. In philanthropy, we lose on many levels when we're not continually questioning our own biases and those built into the social, organizational, and economic structures around us. We leave gifts on the table, communicate in inauthentic and even insulting ways, and fail to prove to #alumni that we are different institutions than they attended in the past. In fact, despite the best efforts of some, our institutions can feel to observers unenlightened relative to their pasts. And systemic #racism has existed for so long that seeing it requires not just good intentions, but active introspection, continual learning, and fulsome humility. It also demands that we make peace that our individual actions will not eliminate racism in society - even on our own journeys to become more anti-racist - but that doesn't excuse us from doing our part. Despite protestations from people steeped in their own nostalgia for "the good old days," which were only good for a few, we are 15-20 years from the United States having no racial majority, according to the U.S. census bureau. Even those who don't subscribe to the moral and ethical reasons to battle racism can understand the credibility crisis our major institutions will have if we don't embed anti-racist narratives and practices in our advancement work. My colleague Maia McGill is a champion for transforming the status quo and helping us see the ways in which we get in our own way around issues of identity. Her teaching on building #inclusive #philanthropy leverages an asset-focused framework, an approach that relies on collaboration and empowerment, rather than perpetuating power imbalances and #saviorism. Regardless of your own lived experience, identity, or role, join a community of practitioners who strive for more equitable and inclusive approaches to philanthropy.
