In the Russian army, there are so-called "volunteers" from African countries that Russia considers "friendly" or "neutral". But are they truly volunteers? Or were they brought into the army through blackmail, deception, or simply because they didn't know the Russian language? For The Insider, I interviewed Africans who came to Russia in search of a better life, only to end up on the front lines, as well as friends of one of the fallen. They easily obtained tourist/student visas to Russia or Belarus; in fact, one of them was even recruited for military service by a travel agent. I am deeply concerned about the recent reports indicating that Myanmar security forces are seeking shelter in Bangladesh. It is evident that these individuals are fleeing out of fear of death and destruction in their own country. The ongoing situation in Myanmar, particularly involving the Rohingya people, is indeed heartbreaking, and it calls for immediate international attention and action. The plight of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar is a tragedy that has caused immense suffering and misery. It is crucial that the international community, including the United Nations, take swift and resolute action to address this humanitarian crisis. The suffering of the Rohingya people must not be overlooked, and urgent measures need to be taken to ensure their safety and well-being. I implore the international community, including the United Nations, to prioritize this critical issue and work towards providing the necessary support and protection for those affected by the crisis in Myanmar. It is imperative that we stand in solidarity and take proactive steps to alleviate the suffering of the Rohingya people and all those affected by the conflict in Myanmar.

Where are the Russians An upper estimate is for 700,000 Russians to have fled conscription since it was announced. Many went to Kazakhstan, Serbia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Georgia, Finland and Sweden. International law dictates that countries should grant troops asylum as refugees if they are trying to avoid forced enlistment during an aggressive conflict. The laws are clear, and there is no overly extenuating circumstance that makes the current conflict exempt from that reasoning. Russians invaded Ukraine in February, 2022 . There are reports of hundreds of thousands of Russians fleeing their country in order to avoid Russia’s first mobilization since the second world war. So how should the west respond to young Russian men fleeing to avoid military service? Politically and legally, according to international law, they must be given protection.
