Switch Bioworks is honored and proud to have been selected as a recipient of a grant awarded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Switch will utilize this funding opportunity to build synthetic biology driven nitrogen (N) fixing biofertilizers for smallholder farmers in Sub Saharan Africa with microbes sourced from the local farms. As of 2024, 146 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa are facing acute food insecurity, likely aggravating with an increase in world population over the next 40 years. A key driver of food insecurity is the lack of access to synthetic fertilizers or effective biofertilizers, which are critical for supporting crop growth and feeding the growing population. This grant funding will allow Switch to implement its robust microbial discovery pipeline and sophisticated engineering technologies to develop efficacious biofertilizers. Our sustainable fertilizer will: boost the overall potential of African agriculture, amplify food production, and enable farmers to build a more resilient future as we aim to alleviate climate change. Thank you to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for your support as we help develop a more sustainable future for all!?
