Opportunity

Long before we were warned about getting into sketchy looking white vans with a man promising candy, I would spend my evenings and weekends doing just that to earn money. At 13 years old, I got my first job with the Junior Sales Club of Texas. I sold candy ?? door to door ??. So of course everytime a young go-getter knocks on my door trying to sell me sweets I don't need, I'm going to buy it while smiling ear to ear as I tell them that I started exactly where they are! ???? This happened recently and it took me back. I still remember the script all these years later. "Hi, my name is Crystal and I'm with the Junior Sales Club of Texas. It's an organization that helps teenagers like myself, stay away from gangs, drugs, and alcohol. Through JSC I am able to stay busy while earning extra money. Today, I have some delicious treats I'd like to show you." There may have been a line about "Chocolate covered turtles that won't bite you back.." ????♀?????♀??? Cheesy, but hey it worked. ?? When I think back to this time, it first reminds me that I've been working for a long time. ?? But also that that job instilled a lot of my work ethic. Lessons Learned: ?? Dedication - I stuck with this job for 2 years, most evenings and weekends. It was a sacrifice but I did it. ?? Goal-setting - In addition to my daily and weekly quotas, I set goals for myself for saving to buy things I really wanted. Like those Jason Kidd sneakers that finally made me popular in middle school ???? ??. See in comments! ?? ?? Confidence - I had to be comfortable speaking to people from different backgrounds while overcoming their possible trepidations. ?? How to create and tailor a sales pitch - Surprise! As great as it was, that cheesy turtle line didn't work on everyone ??. I would learn to read the customer to see what they were most interested in and share what made that item so great. Yesterday, while chatting at Brewdog in Waterloo, the topic of salespeople not keeping their promises came up. Why is it so hard for people to just be honest and stick to what they say? In a world where actions speak louder than words, having integrity is crucial for building strong and lasting relationships. When salespeople are viewed this way, it’s essential to make an extra effort to change the narrative. Surprise them. Go on, be different. Do the right thing. I like to think that people see me as someone with high integrity. I'd rather tell the truth, even if it might upset you, than lie to make things easier for myself. Being a person of integrity is rare and valuable. We should all aim to value honesty, keep our word, and foster relationships built on trust and authenticity.

Halloween and no better time to reflect on some of the horrors that sales and business development professionals encounter every day. Here are some of my favourite Halloween themed challenges I have encountered during my career: ??Ghosts - customer names and accounts where the customer has “moved on” but they remain on the system ??♀?Zombies - the opportunities/ deals which are dead but have been reanimated by sales teams who are nervous their pipeline will look insufficient if they admit the deal is dead ??Frankenstein deals - those deals where you try desperately to stitch together different parts of your business but it doesn’t quite work ??♀?Vampires - those customers or deals which continually feed on your time and energy but vanish in the cold light of actually signing a deal What is your worst sales nightmare? #bellrock #fm #energy #carbon #halloween

This umbrella stroller was a hand-me-down from some friends. It made it through our 5-year-old and is currently the vehicle of choice for our 2-year-old. We have a fancier one that sometimes comes out for longer excursions. But 90% of the time we just use this. And it works great. It's easy to manuever, it's easy to transport, and it's easy for Ferris to push when he decides he wants to drive and not ride. It's compelling when I watch other parents lug around their big fancy strollers that take up a bunch of space and get stuck and don't really do a better job then ours. ... A reminder that often you don't need a lot of bells and whistles in a good tool. You just need a tool that does the job. #sales #salestechstack

I recently saw Twisters with my family at the Cinema and it instantly became my favourite film of 2024. I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it but it stars Glen Powell as a storm chaser who likes to call himself a Tornado Wrangler. As you can imagine he loves what he does and possesses all the confidence of someone who know’s he’s at the top of his game!! It’s incredible what confidence gives you and it can influence all aspects of everything you do. When your full of confidence you start seeing everything in life as an opportunity. Confidence is a belief, If you believe it will work out, you'll see opportunities. If you believe it won't, you'll see obstacles. Opportunity comes for those who extremely have the zeal to achieve it and don't sit back and watch others. If confidence gives you opportunity, then opportunity will give you chance to grow. However, You've got to be more addicted to growth than you are to comfort. That's the only way to reach your true potential. That said, there is no way around hard work, embrace it. You have to put in the hours. I might not be a Tornado Wrangler but with confidence, opportunity, growth and hard work I might just make the best Merchant Wrangler I can be.
