The “long-term hold” strategy is one that has received an increasing amount of attention within the #ETA ecosystem of late: Instead of selling a company within 5-7 years of acquiring it, why might you choose to hold it for a much longer period of time? Explain SAFEs and dilution to me like I'm 5 ?? Pizza Time! ?? Imagine your startup is a pizza. Initially, you and your co-founders own the whole pizza. The goal? Increase its value from $20 to potentially $1 billion! You grow by giving slices to people who help increase its value - investors, advisors, key employees. Yes, you'll own less of the pizza, but its overall value could skyrocket. Even owning just 15% of a $1B pizza is worth $150M! ?? Be Smart with Your Slices Each slice could be worth millions later. In fundraising, founders often give away 10-20% per stage, aiming to retain the majority post-Series A, though they usually lose it by Series B. ?? What About SAFEs? ??? SAFEs (Simple Agreements for Future Equity) are like IOUs for pizza slices, given to investors. They convert into equity during funding rounds, acquisitions, or IPOs. But if your startup fails, SAFEs become worthless. Two types exist: Pre-money SAFEs: Original version, can lead to confusion about ownership %. Post-money SAFEs: Newer version, offers clearer ownership calculations. ?? Key Takeaway Your aim is to increase your pizza's value. Choose wisely who gets a slice.
